application has been processed or renewed and proper documentation has been received by UNWLA Scholarship Program office. Stipends are awarded at different times of the year, depending on what country your student lives in. You will be notified when your student returns to school and/or if he or she has graduated. What documents are required from students? We require the following documents annually: • UNWLA Information/Application Form with recommendations • Copies of: Certificate of School Attendance and/or acceptance • Copy of prior year's report card, index or transcript • Three small photographs • Handwritten autobiography in Ukrainian • Copy of death certificates of parents • Copies of certificates of guardianship for under-aged students • Other documents as may be required in the country, such as an ID card or student visa How will I know that my student received the stipend? When forwarding your stipend to an assigned student, we notify him of his sponsor. It is the obligation of the student to communicate with his or her sponsor and thank this individual for the stipend received. If this does not occur in a timely manner, please notify our office. Will I be assigned the same student next year? Yes, as long as your student is continuing his or her studies and sends all the required documents with recommendations to the UNWLA Scholarship Pro gram office. You will be notified if any changes occur in the student’s status. Am I obligated to continue my sponsorship from year to year? No, there are no obligations. You may discontinue sponsorship by notifying our office so that we can assign your student another sponsor. How long is the student eligible to participate in the program and receive assistance? In most cases, students are eligible until they com plete their studies. This applies even if there is a change in sponsors. Does the program include post-graduate studies? Yes. Who recommends students to the program ad ministrators? We work with trusted educators (teaches, rectors, directors, etc) in most of the countries where our program exists. In Ukraine, we also coordinate our program with the Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine Scholarship Program Committee; Oblast (State) presidents of SUU serve on the board of this com mittee. These individuals recommend candidates for sponsorship and provide preliminary documentation critical to our selection process. How are the students selected? First of all, they must be attending school (and document enrollment) and comply with all other re quirements. Priority is given to the needy: orphans, abandoned children, children with guardians, chil dren from large families or single-parent house holds, children in foster care, and/or disadvantaged children who are good students. All other candi dates will be considered according to economic need. Do you send stipends to orphanages? We do not send stipends to orphanages run by the government because (in most cases) scholarship funds received by such institutions are deposited in a general fund. Stipends from our program are intended for individual students not institutions. We do, however, send stipends to individual students that reside in boarding schools. Do you accept small contributions? Yes. We are thankful for all heartfelt contributions, especially those designated for covering administ rative costs. At times we award smaller stipends from donations to deserving students who are on the waiting list for a sponsor. What is the distinction between a sponsor, a contributor, and a benefactor?
