Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. : Стипендійна Акція Союзу Українок Америки 40 Years of VoCunteerism, generosity, anf Vision by Luba Bilowchtchuk, UNWLA Scholarship Program Chair 1993-2002 As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our UNWLA Scholarship/Children-Students Sponsorship Program, we need to underscore the importance of the spirit of cooperation, trust, and generosity that has permeated the work of UNWLA membership and the hundreds of sponsors and benefactors who have supported this cause. Their belief and support of the UNWLA Scholarship Program has enabled us to award scholarships to deserving needy pupils and students in South America, Europe, and the United States. Their steadfastness and faith have greatly contributed to the growth of the Scholarship Program. From modest beginnings in 1967 to a $100,000+ annual budget in 2007—we have come a long way! Program statistics show that from 1967 to 2007 we had more than three thousand graduates. Twenty thousand scholarships, totaling nearly 4 million dollars, were awarded. UNWLA Branches and individual members were instrumental in fundraising for this cause. Their dedication and commitment to our program has had no bounds. UNWLA Branch 33 of Cleveland, Ohio, was the first sponsor and continues in its resolve to sponsor and find sponsors to assist needy students in the Ukrainian diaspora and in Ukraine. From the earliest years, UNWLA Branch 49 of Buffalo, New York, has dedicated each January to fundraising for the program, including radio broadcasting information and appeals in the Buffalo area. Other branches have followed their lead and, presently, almost all active branches are supporters and/or sponsors. To a great extent, we credit the success and expansion of the UNWLA Scholarship Program to the generosity of sponsors and benefactors who believed that we could succeed and thrive, who cared for "their" children year in and year out, but above all who trusted us. Many of them sponsored the same students for more than 12 years, making it possible for students to complete their education. We are extremely grateful to each and every one of these generous sponsors. Over the decades, their generosity has touched 20,000 young people and opened many windows for a brighter future. Our message to those sponsors is “Their successes are your successes! Thank you and may God bless you all.” We cannot overlook the dedicated educators in Argentina, Bosnia, Brazil, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, former Yugoslavia and other countries, whose hard work and determination contributed to the achievements of the Scholarship Program. And, last but certainly not least, we must give well-deserved credit to the students themselves because their perseverance and yearning for higher education, often under harsh economic conditions, has been strong and steadfast. It is their efforts that the scholarship program has sup ported and enabled, and it is their determination that has turned ideals into reality and has allowed our program to thrive. Volunteerism is one of the keys to our success. For forty years, professional UNWLA Scholarship Program Committee members have donated their expertise and time to ensure a well-defined and structured approach to our program operations. Dedication and countless volunteer hours of the UNWLA Scholarship Program leadership and committee members have minimized our administrative costs, keeping our overhead at approximately 10 percent. Together with M. Orysia Jacus, Anna Krawczuk and Dr. Daria Nowakiwska- Lissy, I am part of this volunteer administration and happy to serve on the UNWLA Scholarship/Children- Student Sponsorship Program, which is currently chaired by Maria Polanskyj.
