Washington, D.C. Community Supports UNWLA Silent Auction at Malanka Gala by Marijka Lischak On January 19, 2008 Washington, D.C.’s Ukrainian community generously supported a charity benefit silent auction sponsored by Branch 78 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. (UNWLA) with support from the Ukrainian Association of Washington (Obyed- nania), the sponsor of the annual Malanka Gala held at the Georgetown University Conference Center. This marked the first time that a silent auction was featured at the annual malanka, and numerous individuals generously donated over 40 items for attendees to bid on. The diverse items to be auctioned off included original artwork prints, watercolors, woodcuts, oils, photographs, hand embroidered items, hand-painted ceramics, gift certificates for Ukrainian pastries, tax preparation services, interior design consultation, an Eastern Shore weekend getaway, hot air balloon rides, a basket of Ukrainian liqueur, a golf package, and various sports memorabilia associated with well- known sports legends. The charity benefit silent auction raised $3,000 for orphans in Ukraine and other charitable, educational, and cultural endeavors undertaken by the UNWLA. The auction committee was spearheaded by Marijka Lischak, and supported by Branch 78 President Sophia Caryk, and members Christine Dulaney, Dawn Galuga, Ksenia Lutz, Anya Piazza, and Tania Terleckyj. We offer huge kudos to Rick Dulaney who lent us his talent with the computer program and structured the bidding process. Auction items were donated by Sophia Caryk, Theodore and Theresa Caryk, Andrew and Tania Charchalis, Olya Chodoba Fryz, Slavko and Dawn Galuga, Orest Hanas, Martha Himiak Voyevidka, Boris and Ulana Hlynsky, Stephanie and Mira Hnizdovsky, Stephen and Martha Holder, Jared H.
