Well before the convention, branch presidents must also prepare, write, and submit a report about branch activities for publication in the convention book—and do so by a deadline! Before ending this month’s message, I would like to share with readers information about two important events. The first of these involves the Ukrainian Museum in New York, which will be exhibiting the artifacts purchased by UNWLA for the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1933. Please look for the dates of the exhibit in Ukrainian newspapers. We will be posting information about this event on our Website. The second event I would like to describe took place this summer: the 39th session of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. At this meeting, countries were evaluated on their performance in implementing the CEDAW Convention, which addresses many aspects of women’s lives, including, but not limited to, Family, Gender Empowerment, Healthcare, Aging, and Women in Decision-Making Positions. I followed with much interest some of deliberations on events in Singapore and New Zealand. Present at the session were the representatives from non-governmental organizations with their shadow reports, members of National Councils of both countries. It was good to see them because they were the women that had also attended the International General Assembly in Kyiv Ukraine in 2006. Most of them approached me and told me again how much they had enjoyed the General Assembly and their stay in Ukraine. The President of the International Council of Women, Dr. Anamah Tan, was elected to sit on the council that monitors the deliberations of governments and to observe, as well, the side events during which the council hears the non-governmental representatives that present the shadow reports. One of the interesting aspects of these reports is that they often present information that is contrary to what the governments are saying. The UN sessions were interesting and inspiring. One important lesson that I learned was that women of the world are very fortunate to be living in a time that the international community has finally recognized the plight of women and has created documents, protocols, and conventions expressly for the protection of women. The one unfortunate stumbling block for women is that many of the mechanisms provided for in these international (and sometimes national) guarantees are not implemented simply because many women do not know they exist and do not realize that their governments are signatories who have pledged to protect them. The Right to Be Proud As an American by birth, and equally proud of my Ukrainian heritage, I feel privileged to be a member of this panel and to be able to share with all of you my feelings of patriotism for the country in which I was bom and for Ukraine. My parents, in their pursuit of freedom and economic security, came to these shores with the early wave of immigrants in 1912. The road for the Ukrainian pioneers at the time was a rocky one. And as the comedian Sam Levenson once said, “When my father came over from the old country, he found out three things: 1. That the streets were not paved with gold; 2. That most of the streets were not even paved; and 3. That he had to pave them. When I was a child, my parents instilled in me their love for Ukraine and made me aware of the Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
