OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LXIV SEPTEMBER 2007 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President After what many of us see as an all too brief summer respite, September is upon us. For UNWLA Board Members, including your president, only nine months of a three-year term remain, and all of us are working hard to complete and fulfill the commitments that we made at the XXVII Convention. It has been an interesting journey for all of us, one that will culminate in a tradition established by our prede cessors—a UNWLA convention during which new UNWLA leader ship will be elected and begin their own three-year term as Board Members. In September, UNWLA members throughout the United States will be resuming their work in the organization. Branch presidents will be calling meetings to order, minutes of the previous meeting will be read, and branch members will discuss future plans and goals. There are several goals that I urge all branches presidents to keep in mind, many of them related to our triennial convention. The XXVIII UNWLA Convention will be held in Detroit during Memorial Day weekend in 2008. Like all previous conventions, this convention presents an opportunity for UNWLA members to meet old friends and make new acquaintances, exchange ideas, discuss important issues, and vote for new leaders. The UNWLA Convention is the highest legislative power of our organization, and delegates to the convention have the right to vote for changes, new projects, and new programs in accordance with UNWLA bylaws. It is an honor and a privilege to be a delegate to the UNWLA convention and have the right to vote. We hope each delegate exercises this privilege, makes her presence felt, and enjoys the knowledge that her vote and her participation is important. During this UNWLA convention, as in the past, the UNWLA will once again honor Young Women Achievers at the convention banquet. We urge UNWLA members and the Ukrainian community at large to submit the names of suitable candidates as soon as possible. The XXVIII Convention will continue another important tradition: recognizing Branches and Regional Councils and individual UNWLA Members for their achievements. Branch presidents in particular are asked to remember that their performance is measured to the extent that they have met certain criteria, the most important of which is how well they carried out their responsibilities to the organization. I emphasize this for the following reasons. When I look at the structure of the UNWLA and consider who is recognized during conventions, it strikes me that UNWLA branch presidents sometimes shoulder the heaviest burden within our organization. After all, it is branch presidents who preserve the momentum of the day-to-day and month-to-month activities of the organization. Women who serve as branch presidents are not merely paper tigers with a pretty title. They have many duties and wear many hats. They serve as liaisons between branch members and the UNWLA Executive Board. They must be leaders, they must inspire, and they must sometimes be unflinching taskmasters who bring out the best in others even when others think something is too difficult to do. They must oversee the work of their chairs, they must make certain that all members have paid their dues, and must
