The Story of a Cooking DVD and the People Behind It A few months ago, my friend Chrystyna Prokopovych told me about an instructional DVD for preparing traditional Ukrainian Christmas dishes with some not so traditional methods and appliances. She had tried several of the recipes, was impressed, and suggested that I write and publish a review in Our Life. I contacted the producers, watched the DVD, and here we are. Some readers may be wondering why an editor would review a DVD on Christmas Eve cooking in May rather than focusing on springtime events, but there are actually two very good reasons to do so. For one thing, we celebrate Mother’s Day in May, and it was mothers (and grandmothers) who inspired the DVD. Thus, in a sense, this review celebrates all the mothers and grandmothers who lovingly preserved an ancient and delicious culinary heritage while adjusting to life in a new country. Another reason for the timing of this review is that June, a popular month for weddings, is just around the corner. Our fast-paced and hectic culture is not at all conducive to spending a lot of time preparing a 12-course Christmas Eve dinner with traditional tools and techniques, and this makes the DVD a lovely shower or wedding gift—one that will make carrying on the culinary heritage brought to this country by thousands of intrepid mothers and grandmothers a little easier and a lot more fun for young brides who want to follow in their mothers ’ footsteps but may not have the time or skills. An endnote to this background blurb is that Chrystyna, who introduced me to the people who created this DVD, is an excellent and enthusiastic cook while I am neither, and it is this distinction that ultimately shaped the flavor and substance of the review presented below. —Tamara Stadnychenko rijka currently works as deputy of development and public affairs at a health systems research institute; Tania has worked in the television industry for over twenty years, helping to establish independent television stations in the early 1990’s in the newly- independent Ukraine, and now works as a freelance director for many nationally and internationally televised news and sports programs; and Katerina works in international economic development, a career that has taken her to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and most recently, Africa. All three grew up in Ukrainian-American households and learned traditional Ukrainian cooking from their mothers and grandmothers. What they learned eventually inspired them to create, package, and market the DVD that is the subject of this review. As Director and Executive Producer Tania Terleckyj explains, "A few years back, Marijka, Katerina, and I helped organize a Ukrainian paska and babka bread making class for our local branch of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. There was great interest in the class and a “Christmas Eve: Traditional Ukrainian lot of overall interest in Ukrainian cooking as well Cooking for Today’s Modem Cook” is the brain- as an interest in keeping traditional Ukrainian child of Tania Terleckyj, Marijka Lischak, and cooking alive in this country. But cooking and Katerina Sloniewsky Ntep, all bom and raised in the baking can be rather complicated, and following United States, all active members of UNWLA recipes in a cookbook alone is often not enough. We Branch 78, and all busy professionals engaged in realized that there was a void that needed to be interesting work with demanding schedules. Ma- filled.” Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
