The UNWLA also salutes newly elected Regional Council President of N ew England Ulana Zinych, new ly reelected Regional Council President of Central N ew York Luba Kushnir-Dryansky, newly reelected Detroit Regional Council President Daria Zawadiwsky, and and new ly reelected Chicago Regional Council President Lubomyra Kalin. M ay God bless your endeavors and grant you m uch happiness and success in your work. On February 17, Branch 56 of North Port, Florida, hosted a banquet and Embroidery Ball to cele brated the 80th anniversary of the UNWLA and the 15th anniversary of the founding of the branch. It was a wonderful event during which guests had the pleasure of displaying or viewing many creatively embroidered evening gowns. Once a popular event among UNWLA, the “Embroidery Ball” has become a rare event as UNWLA members and Branches focused on other ideas and activities. The ball hosted by Branch 56 was a charming and gracious reminder of a beautiful tradition that is a wonderful way for members and their guests to enjoy a social evening while showing pride in their heritage. A very informative and complimentary article, written by Mr. Atanas Kobryn, was published in the local newspaper about this celebration in North Port. I had a wonderful time and would like to express my appreciation to Mrs. Holovata for the invitation and for the opportunity to speak with the members of Branch 56 during a special meeting that she organized. At this meeting, Mrs. Holovata presented the UNWLA with a check for $2500, a donation from Branch 56 for office equipment for UNWLA Headquarters. This is the second donation from Branch 56, which has now contributed $5,000 for this purpose and has earned our most sincere appreciation for such generosity. I would also like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Navarynsky for donating $500 through Branch 56 for the UNWLA building fund. A word of thanks must also be extended to Dr. Dycio, who donated to the Executive Committee one of her paintings, to be raffled off in the near future for the UNWLA needs. On a personal note, my husband and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Lidia and Orest Bilous for their hospitality. To Roxolana and Mychaylo Jarymovych, Orysia and Jaroslaw Zinych, and all of the dear members of Branch 56 who helped make our visit to North Port memorable, we offer a sincere “thank you” as well. On February 24, I visited Branch 3 of Phoenix, Arizona, and had a lengthy and interesting meeting with Branch 3 President Christine Boyko and several other branch members. I was pleased to see that Ms. Boyko is a natural leader who is not only active in her role as president of a UNWLA branch, but also contributes her skills and energy to planning and executing other community activities and events. During the month of March, members of the UNWLA Executive Committee visited various Regions and Branches. UNWLA Vice President Marianna Zajac attended the annual meetings of the New York Central Regional Council and New England Regional Council. On March 10, First Vice President Oxana Farion attended the annual meeting of Chicago Regional Council while UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj attended the annual meeting of Detroit Regional Council. I would like to thank Regional Council President Daria Zawadiwsky and Mr. and Mrs. Hewko for their hospitality during my visit. As you know, the UNWLA Convention will be hosted in Detroit in 2008. Nusha Macilinsky, Chair of the 2008 Convention Committee and other convention committee members are to be commended for the work they have already done as they prepare for the convention. It is a monumental task and their enthusiasm for the work and the progress they have made to date are very impressive. During my visit, I met with many members of Detroit Regional Council; each one worked to ensure that my stay was a very pleasant experience. On March З, I attended a meeting of Ukrainian World Congress in Toronto, Canada, which included a festive banquet celebrating the 40th anniversary of the UWC. The following day a meeting was held of the World Commemoration of the Great Famine in Ukraine. Some important decisions were made at this meeting and I will share a few of these with readers. First, it was determined that all participating diaspora organizations must use the same figure to designate the number of those who perished in the Great Famine in 1932 and 1933, and that number is 10 million (no less and no more). The second decision involved the Famine monument which is to be erected in Washington, D.C. It was determined that even though the United State government has donated land for the monument, the Ukrainian diaspora must raise funds for the monument. It was further determined that Ukraine’s great tragedy must be addressed as Genocide. Your president is serving on the special events and exhibits subcommittee of the World Committee on Famine.
