OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LXIV APRIL 2007 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President Hahilky (ritual choral dancing performed during Easter season) at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church in New York City This year, Easter is celebrated at the same time by all Ukrainian Christians, whether they follow the Julian or the Gregorian calendar. During this most holy season, we observe many beautiful religious and cultural traditions, and these symbols of our faith and of our heritage unite us and bring us joy. For Ukrainians, however, the month of April is also a sad month during which we commemorate tragic events in history. One of these events is the nuclear disaster at Chomobyl, a disaster that still affects thousands of innocent victims of radioactive fallout. This year we also commemorate the 60th anniversary of “Akcia Visla,” a political event that forced many thousands from their homes and can be compared to the Trail of Tears that haunts Native Americans who suffered a similar forced displacement in this country. I ask that all of you take a moment during this holy season to remember those who suffered during Akcia Visla and those who are still enduring the legacy of Chomobyl. Take another moment or two to teach the children of today about these events in Ukrainian history. This month’s Desk of the President continues with news about our organization, UNWLA Branches, UNWLA members, and important news about other organizations with which we are affiliated or which influence life in the Ukrainian diaspora and in Ukraine. On behalf of the UNWLA I would like to extend congratulations and good wishes for success to the newly formed Fourth Wave Organization.
