OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LXIII OCTOBER 2006 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk o f the President Oxana Far ion, NCW/US delegate to the ICW General Assembly; Iryna Holubyeva, president ofN C W Ukraine; Iryna Kurowyckyj, Proxy President o f NCW/US and IC W ’s main representative to the United Nations. In this issue of Our Life, I would like to share with you some information about the events that took place in Ukraine from August 14 to September 12, 2006. This report must begin with a word of appreciation to AeroSvit and its general manager Mykola Kravets, for providing the best possible fares to Ukraine, even at short notice. I must also note that all costs for my visit to Ukraine (including airfare, hotel, registration fees for the General Assembly of the International Council of Women, and associated peripheral expenses) were covered by me and were not funded by the UNWLA. Vice President Oxana Farion, who also traveled to Ukraine to attend the ICW General Assembly, covered all her expenses personally as well. In Kyiv, the first of many events I attended was the Annual Meeting of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, which took place August 15 to August 17. I would like to express my appreciation to WFUWO President Maria Szkambara for holding the meeting in Europe and thus under scoring that the organization is a world body. Her foresight in making this decision was further emphasized by the meeting’s initial event. Held at the Writers Building in Kyiv, the meeting began with a break-out session, which was dedicated to the European WFUWO and was conducted by WFUWO Vice President Lilia Tsikailska. The Annual Meeting was officially opened on the following day by President Maria Szkambara. Among the dignitaries attending the meeting was Dr. Askold Lozynsky, president of Ukrainian World Con gress, who greeted the attendees from 17 countries around the world. Following the formal opening cere mony, the meeting agenda was approved, with the following items to be discussed: reports of the president and the board, followed by reports from member organizations and several workshops. One of workshops held during the three-day meeting focused on the status of the Ukrainian family today and the status of Ukrainian emigre families living and working in various countries. Another workshop focused on a subject that has been of concern to Ukrainians (in Ukraine and in the diaspora) for many decades: “How to Save Ukrainian Youth.”
