Branch 113 Goes Classical by Ilona Sochynsky Shyprykevich The ancient city o f Chersonesos, located on the outskirts o f Sevastopol in southwestern Crimea, was founded as a Greek colony in the 5th century BC and existed as a city until the 14th century AD when it was overrun by the Mongols. Chersonesos became a Roman base and, subsequently, a leading defensive outpost and cultural and trading center on the northern periphery o f the Byzantine Empire. In 988 Prince Volodymyr o f Kyivan Rus ’ was reputedly baptized here, bringing Christianity to the Slavic world. —Taissa Bushnell On Sunday, October 1, 2006, Taissa Bush nell was the featured speaker of an event cospon sored by UNWLA Branch 113 and the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Attended by more than 150 people, the event was entitled "Managing the Archeological Heritage of Chersonesos: Problems and Perspectives.” Ms. Bushnell’s lecture, enhanced by a riveting and extensive slide presentation, brought to life the history of the 2,000-year old archaeological site, which is located on the Black Sea coast of modern-day Ukraine. The Ukrainian Museum was a fitting site for Ms. Bushnell’s inspiring presentation. In her introductory remarks, she noted that her journey into the fascinating field of archeology was sparked listening to other lectures held at the museum, specifically, lectures given by Dr. Olena Pevny. The journey has been extensive, both from an educatio nal perspective and from the perspective of hands- on experience with the subject matter. Ms. Bushnell holds a bachelor and a master of arts degree in Art History from McGill Univer sity in Montreal as well as a degree in Managing Archeological Sites from the University of London, where the subject of her thesis was Chersonesos. She has been working in Chersonesos for the past six years, first as an excavation volunteer and later as a project coordinator for the Institute of Classical Archaeology. During the lecture, Ms. Bushnell’s expertise in the subject matter was matched with an enthu siastic appreciation of the efforts of archeologists to study and preserve the treasures of ancient cultures. In connection with this, Ms. Bushnell described the efforts being made to gain political and financial support to protect the archeological site at Cher sonesos. A unique monument, layered with the remnants of ancient empires, it tells a rich and colorful story of human life, human destructiveness, and human spirituality. The site is currently on Ukraine's Tentative List of sites to be nominated to UNESCO's World Heritage List. Following the presentation, Olga Hnateyko and Maria Shust, President of the Ukrainian Museum Board and Executive Director, respec tively, thanked the members of Branch 113 for their continued support and work on behalf of the Ukrainian Museum. They also introduced Ola Lewicky, who as cultural/educational chair of Branch 113, had organized this program. Drawing on an idea originally conceived by the Branch’s previous cultural/educational chair, Alla Leshko, Ms. Lewicky skillfully managed to turn concept into reality by uniting ideas and inspiring participants to work until everything was right. Credit must also be given to other members of Branch 113 who helped make this lecture a success: Branch President Irena Steckiv, for sup porting the project so enthusiastically; Ola Zaricky, for masterminding the buffet; and Ilona Sochynsky Shyprykevich, for creating her color poster for the event. A word of thanks must be extended to Ludko Zaricky, who graciously agreed to tend to the wine bar. Author Ilona Sochynsky Shyprykevich, is Press Chair o f UNWLA Branch 113. Photographs accompanying the article were taken by author (at the lecture) and Chris Williams (at Chersonesos ). Branch 113 cordially invites you to its 20th Anniversary Gala, to be held at the Ukrainian Institute o f America, 2 East 79th Street, N.Y., on December 2, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. Evening attire requested.
