3. A focus group questionnaire will be created and sent out to all Regional Councils by year’s end. Regional Council Presidents will be asked to target particular “focus groups” in their communities and conduct surveys to help them determine how our organization can attract a broader audience with the purpose of increasing membership. During the annual meeting, the National Board voted to approve an additional proposal: All member donations made to the Holodomor Memorial or connected activities must be forwarded to UNWLA headquarters. This is mandatory and allows our organization to keep an exact accounting of sums donated by our membership. * * * On October 5, 2006, the NGO’s at the UN celebrated the International Day of Elderly People. The session began with a message from UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, followed by greetings from the President of the General Assembly, H. E. Sheikha Hay Rashed A1 Khalifa, who is the third woman to hold this position in 62 years. On October 7, 2006, a meeting was called by so called “4th wave of immigrants” in Stamford, Connecticut. Hosted by the Bishop’s Eparchy, the meeting was attended by approximately 35 people. It was well prepared and covered by local press and television reporters. Reports on this event will also published in most Ukrainian papers. The purpose of the meeting was to form a new organization that focuses on the needs of new Ukrainian immigrants to the United States. After the Bishop greeted the gathering, Myroslava Rozdolska called this meeting to order. I was invited to this meeting and was initially asked to speak on the IV Ukrainian World Forum that I attended this summer. Due to program changes, the topic I presented at the meeting was on the UNWLA’s work with the Ukrainian Government. In my presentation, I noted that the UNWLA has good relations with members of the government that represent Ukraine in the United States. I also explained that a great number of recent immigrants from Ukraine are members of our organization and that many of them hold important positions in our organization at all levels (national, regional, and branch). Our Life's editor, Irena Chaban, also attended this meeting. On October 14, a meeting was called by UCCA to plan commemorative activities for the 75th Anniversary of the Great Famine of 1932-1933. Members of the Famine Commemoration Committee include the following UNWLA members: Christine Shwed, Nadia Cwiach, Irena Chaban, Iryna Kurowyckyj. I have proposed that several other UNWLA members join this group. The UNWLA became a member of the Ukraine’s Quest for Mature Nations Statehood Roundtable Series, that began when a number of Ukrainian and American organizations convened in April of 2000 to consider ways to encourage a dialogue between the United States and Ukraine. This year the UNWLA was invited to be part of the committee, and President Iryna Kurowyckyj was listed as a member of the Steering Committee. This was the seventh program of its kind, and it addressed “Ukraine’s membership in NATO.” The speakers were government and key nongovernmental representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and Ukraine’s neighbors that have already joined NATO. Also attending were experts from academia that evaluate counties’ readiness to assume a place in the Euro-Atlantic world. The event took place in Washington, DC. On October 17, three members of UNWLA took part in the program: Iryna Kurowyckyj, UNWLA President; Nadia Sawchuk, New York Regional Council President; and Natalia Duma, member of the Executive Committee of NY Regional Council.
