OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LXIII NOVEMBER 2006 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President Happy Thanksgiving The October Circular from Ukrainian World Congress noted that in 2007 Ukrainians worldwide will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor, the 6oth anniversary of “Akciya Wisla,” and the 40th anniversary of founding of the UWC. The first two of these events, engineered by foreign powers, were part of the tragic history of the Ukrainian people. The third is a symbol of hope—the birth of an organization that has endeavored to bring unity and understanding to people who have been scattered throughout the world by war, political repression, and economic circumstances, and yet maintain their ties to a country whose language, music, culture, and history is their common heritage. Like others in the Ukrainian diaspora, UNWLA members will commemorate each of these events, individually or as a group. During some commemorative events, we will remember the people who perished, while giving thanks to God that Ukraine and her people have survived, endured, and grown stronger. My message now turns to events that concern our organization, one of which was the UNWLA’s Annual Board Meeting, which took place from September 29 to October 1, 2006. The meeting was held in the UNWLA’s newly renovated office, located on the 5th floor of the building we co-own with UCCA in New York. City. The renovations were made possible by generous contributions from our membership and from supporters of our organization. Currently, we- are in the midst of renovating the 4th floor of this building, which will provide additional office space and meeting facilities. A t this time I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Wolodymyr and Mrs. A nna Rak, who have contributed $1,000 fo r this purpose. The National Board meeting officially opened on Friday September 29, 2006, with roundtable discussions addressing the following topics: Financial Status of Our Life and the UNWLA (chaired by first Vice President Oxana Farion), Membership (chaired by Vice President in charge of membership, Marta Danyluk) and Leadership (chaired by Vice President for Public Relations Marianna Zajac). The three groups thoroughly addressed these three topics and many interesting ideas were proposed and discussed, including ways that members of our organization can work to achieve goals we have set for ourselves by working at the grassroots level. It was a lively and productive discussion, which encouraged everyone to express opinions and make suggestions on ways to improve the way our organization functions. The proposals emerging from the roundtable discussions were voted on during the last day of the annual meeting. A complete list, broken down by topic, follows:
