OUR LIFE M onthly, published by Ukrainian National W om en’s League o f Am erica Vol. LXIII JULY-AUGUST 2006 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO I pledge allegiance to the fla g o f the U nited States o f America, and to the republic fo r w hich it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, w ith liberty and justice fo r all. U krainian Verkhovna Rada proclaim s independence. A ugust 24,1991 Slava U krayinil From the D esk o f the President We begin this issue of Our Life magazine, which covers the months of July and August, with a tribute to two nations, Ukraine and the United States of America, and to those who had the courage and the vision to sever the bonds of tyranny and choose freedom. These two nations are dear to our hearts. Ukraine is the distant and beloved country that shaped our cultural identity, our language, our history, and our music. The United States is the country that welcomed us as immigrants and gave us the opportunity and freedom to live in peace and preserve our national identity and cultural heritage. History teaches us that independence is a slow process, an evolution that begins with a proclamation and matures over time. This year, the United States is celebrating 230 years of independence. Over the course of two centuries, the country has experienced growing pains and political and social upheavals. It has faced challenges and threats and has responded to both through trial and error, through change, and through perseverance. As a sovereign state, Ukraine is still in its infancy. Fifteen years ago, few Ukrainians dreamed they would live to see the freedoms they enjoy today. The road to independence was long and arduous. Even today, Ukraine is faced with many economic and political and social challenges. For many, the future is uncertain and filled with treacherous obstacles that must be surmounted and defeated before these challenges are met and transformed into opportunities. But, as the history of the United States has taught us, social, economic, and political stability do not come overnight. They come through perseverance and hard work and the belief that something strong and good is being created. They also come from faith. No matter how bleak matters seem, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. The country of our origin is most certainly heading in that direction. In many ways, Ukraine’s evolution into a democracy is more difficult than the evolution experienced by the United States. Ironically, one of the things that makes this true is modern technology, a free press, and free speech. I would like to share with you a story that was told to a group of women by a reporter who described the blessings and hindrance of today’s media, which disseminates news as fast as it takes to switch
