Winterizing Your Body by Ihor Magun, M.D., F.A.C.P. You may want to escape it, but winter is here. The car cranks up more slowly, and we hope the ice and snow don't damage the roof. But while most people winterize their homes and cars, they neglect basic body needs during this season. Making a few changes in a daily (emphasis on daily) care can offset problems. Winter is a study in contrasts that the human body does not always like. Outside, we have cold air and low humidity. Inside, we have dry heat. Both take their toll, making us uncomfortable and produc ing dry, cracked skin. Just as location, location, lo cation is important in real estate, moisture, moisture, moisture is the key word for bodies in winter. One of the things you can do to make your body feel better is to cut down on those long show ers or baths. In the winter months, shorter is better. Use soaps that moisturize and go easy on the towel drying (pat don't rub). Apply moisturizing lotion within three minutes of bathing; this helps trap wa ter in the upper layers of the skin. In addition to moisturizers, invest in a mi croderm abrasion facial kit. Once available only through a dermatologist, these kits are now sold over the counter at most pharmacies and help you look and feel better. Used two times per week, they involve a two-step process that accomplishes two important things. The first step exfoliates the skin and the second step hydrates the skin. The results are quite impressive. Other cosmetic ingredients beneficial for winter skin are retinoids. These products can de crease fine lines and wrinkles and prevent signs of aging when used regularly. They are also available as over-the-counter preparations, but stronger pre- scription-strength doses are even more effective. Despite their cosmetic benefits, however, retinoids may dry the skin, so keep the moisturizer handy. Winter can also be tough on the eyes, some thing that most people don't think about. Most of us wear sunglasses to protect our eyes during the hot summer months, but sunglasses can also protect the eyes during the winter. Snow reflects light and while you are out skiing or shoveling on a sunny day, your eyes may be suffering from the glare. This also ap plies to your skin, and sunscreen (which doubles as a moisturizer) is also good idea. SPF of 15 or higher year round is recommended. On the other hand, many winter days are dark and gloomy, and you should also remember that sunless days limit your exposure to Vitamin D. Taking vitamins seriously and regularly is good practice, and remember that Vitamin D is especially important for women with osteoporosis. Also take steps to protect yourself from the cold by wearing a hat. The scalp is very rich in blood vessels. When the scalp is exposed to the cold air, precious heat is lost and you feel colder. Wear ing a hat can make you warmer than putting on an extra sweater under your coat. Finally, rethink the old myth about petro leum jelly being a moisturizer. It is not, and should not be used as such. However, as a lip balm, it shines. Lips are delicate and should be protected from sun, wind, and cold air. Petroleum jelly keeps them safe and soft and ready for kissing. We would like to thank our authors for the wonderful articles that they contribute to Our Life.
