The economic situation in Ukraine and great unemployment forces women to emigrate. At this time, trafficking of people is addressed in article # 149 Criminal code of Ukraine. Our government's position on this matter was also confirmed internationally: Ukraine is a signatory of the UN Con vention on Human Trafficking. In addition, the Ukrainian government has proposed the following initiatives and programs to prevent trafficking: Prosecution of traffickers, the rescue, return, and rehabilitation of trafficked per sons, stricter border controls, and education about the consequences of trafficking. Educational efforts will include dissemination of fliers, a hot line for youth, and government media programs providing information about the sexual exploitation. Our Ministry has established a national bureau to act against human trafficking and other programs that are aimed at addressing and preventing trafficking. Non-governmental organizations are also working with us. Among these are La Strada—Ukraine, Women’s Consortium Ukraine, Soyuz Ukrainok, Zhinocha Hromada, and others. Please allow me, shanovna Mrs. Iryna, as President of one of the most active women’s organi zation in the United States diaspora, to ask that you join us in a consolidated action plan that is sup ported by the women’s movement worldwide. Unity in this cause will strengthen all of us and ensure that our words and our work are recognized and supported on an international level. The Commission on the Status of Women will convene from February 28 to March 15, 2006, and once again we will be addressing the problem that women face throughout the world. At the top of the agenda will be the human rights issue and the trafficking of women that is a violation of hu man rights." Palijczuk $50 Mr. and Mrs W. Teluk $50 Ms. Irene Waslawiw $10 Dr. Nicolis Zosijczuk $25 Prof. Tamara Woroby $25 From the editor: The Desk of the President published in the November 2005 issue of Our Life contained a typographical error, giving the years of the Great Famine in Ukraine as 1933-1934 rather than 1932-1933. In addition, a sentence indicating that the UNWLA had learned of the famine in 1933 and clarifying the UNWLA's participation in relief efforts through 1934 was inadvertently omitted from the text. The editor would like to apologize to President Iryna Kurowyckyj and to readers for this unfortunate oversight. Please note that while all of us work very hard to ensure accuracy in the materials published in these pages, our efforts are human and subject to human imperfections.
