May in d i v i d u a l members of UNWLA, including its executive officers and regional and branch leaders, make public statements in support of U. S. and foreign candidates ’ campaigns? Yes, but only in their i n d i v i d u a l c a p a c itie s . Organizational leaders who make written or verbal statements endorsing a candidate for political office should clearly indicate that their comments are personal and not intended to represent the views of UNWLA. May UNWLA sell advertising space in its periodical Our Life without tax consequences? Generally yes, as long as substantially all of the advertising activities are performed by unpaid volunteers. How and when should donations to UNWLA be acknowledged? A written acknowledgment should be provided to the donor either by paper copy (on UNWLA letterhead) or by e-mail, addressed to the donor, by January 31 of the year following the donation. Without a written acknowledgment, a donor cannot claim a tax deduction for any single contribution of $250 or more. What is the recommended wording for the written acknowledgment? Here are examples of acceptable written acknowledgments: FOR CASH OR CHECK DONATIONS TO UNWLA GENERALLY: • “Thank you for your monetary contribution of $ ____________ that UNWLA received on _____________ . No goods or services were provided in exchange for your contribution.” FOR CASH OR CHECK DONATIONS IN THE NAME OF A SPECIFIC UNWLA FUND: • “Thank you for your contribution of $ ________ to UNWLA made in the name of its [Social Welfare ] Fund received on ____________ . No goods or services were provided in exchange for your contribution.” FOR NON-CASH (PROPERTY) CONTRIBUTIONS: • “Thank you for your contribution of a [ used HP 6830personal computer ] that UNWLA received on __________ .
