OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXII SEPTEMBER 2005 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President As we enter the fall season, I hope that all of our members had an enjoyable summer and are rested and energized to resume work in our organization. The coming months will bring many new challenges and interesting events. This year, we began celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UNWLA. Our organi zation has a proud history; our members have done many things to improve the quality of life for others. In celebrating this anniversary, one of our goals is to make certain that others learn about our history and about our manifold good deeds. I urge Branches and Regional Councils to keep this goal in mind when preparing celebratory programs to mark this anniversary. On September 11, we will be hosting a special event at the Ukrainian National Home in New Your City. The program will begin with a solemn commemoration of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. In the days following these attacks, our nation was united in its resolve to survive this terrible tragedy. Communities and individuals found the strength to show the terrorists and their leaders that their heinous acts would not destroy us. They resumed their lives and refocused on things that matter: life, family, work, tradition, and celebration of important events. For this reason, we have chosen to begin this event with a tribute to the victims of 9/11 and close with a tribute to an important tradition in the UNWLA—60 years of uninterrupted publication of O u r L ife . Our organization will also be hosting numerous other events, which will be announced in the Ukrainian press, on BRAMA's web site, and on our own web site. Many of these events will be attended by elected officials, by representatives of other women's organizations, by members of the press, and by members of the Ukrainian community at large. One of the reasons our programs are well attended is that the UNWLA has always worked to reach out to other people and other organizations. On July 22 of this year, I was invited to breakfast with Mayor Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion. It was a working breakfast attended by 16 accomplished and inspiring women who met to discuss ways to improve the great city of New York, especially in connection with the NYC Commission on Women’s Issues. The goal of this commission is to expand opportunities for the women of New York City by promoting their economic and social well being, education, and family life. During this event, I spoke on the problem of modem day slavery of women and children. Because many New York City colleges and universities now have women’s studies and gender equality programs, I proposed that these institutions might consider sponsoring students from Ukraine to attend related classes and seminars. I also presented the mayor with a request from the UNWLA, asking that he proclaim August 24 Ukrainian Independence Day in New York City. We are continuing our work in renovating UNWLA headquarters. Building codes in New York City have changed, and we must adhere to the new codes. The building has suffered from neglect for 29 years, and many costly changes must be made. We cannot proceed without additional funds, and I ask all of you to do some fundraising for this purpose. All of us have done splendid work in supporting the building fund for the Museum. Now it is our turn to do something for ourselves. The National Board Meeting of the UNWLA will be held on November 12 and 13, 2005. If you have any problems, questions, or suggestions, please contact presidents of your Regional Councils or the liaison for branches-at-large. During renovations, we may encounter a problem with phones and fax. Please feel free to get in touch with me at home at 212 477-0039. 'НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2005 11
