VERA M. CREADY M arch 6 , 1 9 4 5 -A p ril 4 , 2 0 0 5 At a branch meeting held only a few months ago, members of Branch 50 enjoyed the delightful company of Vera Cready, whose engaging smile and cheerfulness and friendship will be remembered and missed by many. Always full of energy and ready to help with all branch enterprises, Vera was an active UNWLA member; for some time, she served Branch 50 as Organization Committee Chair and was the kind of person who made our organiza tion so successful. Vera's childhood years were spent in a dis placed person's camp in West Germany. Her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Massa chusetts where Vera graduated from high school. She subsequently earned a B.A. in History from the University of Massachusetts (Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude). Moving to Ohio, Vera contin ued her studies and was awarded a Master of Educa tion degree from the University of Toledo. For 36 years, she taught special education, finally retiring in July 2004. She also taught classes in religion and Ukrainian language at St. Michael Ukrainian Catho lic Church in Rossford. In the 1960s, Vera worked for the United States government as program director of the mili tary service club in South Korea. It was during this time that she met Ronald Cready, who was serving in the army and working at the service club while off duty. After they were married, Vera inspired her husband with her love for things Ukrainian. To gether they served as volunteers with the Anastasia Fund, a charitable organization that sends aid to needy people in Ukraine. Vera M. Cready passed from this life on April 4, 2005. She will be deeply missed by her col leagues at the schools where she taught, by the pa rishioners of St. Michael's Church, and by her friends in Branch 50. Most of all, she will be missed by her devoted husband Ronald; her three daughters, Catherine, Susan, and Christine; and her sisters, Maryann Mysyshyn and Orysia Popovych. To all of them we extend our heartfelt condolences. We shall pray for you, dear Vera, and thank God for bringing you into our midst. May you rest in peace, dear soul. — Assy a Humesky, Press Chair Branch 50 (Princess Olha) The editors of Our Life extend condolences to the family o f Vera M. Cready and gratefully acknowledge the generous donation of $150, contributed to Our Life Press Fund by Branch 50 in her memory. May's Silenced Voices In 1876, Russia was ruled by Czar Alexander III, an autocrat dedicated to strengthening his empire through systematic repression, censorship, persecution, and Russification. In connection with this last, the Czar issued the Ems Ukase, an infamous document that prohibited the publication of original works or trans lations in the Ukrainian language. The Ukase included a clause that specifically forbade publication of Ukrainian lyrics in any musical works. During the 1970s and 1980s, this legacy of Russification was reasserted under the communist regime of Leonid Brezhnev. The persecution of Ukrainian dissidents was conducted systematically and brutally. One of the victims of these tragic years was a 30-year old composer named Volodymyr Ivasiuk, whose melodies and lyrics in the Ukrainian language undermined Moscow's policies by prompting an interest in Ukrainian popular music. Ivasiuk was tortured and murdered in May 1979. Though the perpetrators were never identi fied, it is believed that his death was the handiwork of KGB agents. 18 “НАШ Е Ж ИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2005 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
