Preserving Ukrainian Heritage and Commemorating the Victims of the 1 9 3 2 -1 9 3 3 Famine in Ukraine by Anna Krawczuk Ukrainian embroidered blouses, gerdany, and other artifacts displayed by Branch 98 at Monmouth County Library For more than a year, members of Branch 98 (Holmdel/Middletown, New Jersey) busily prepared to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. Our main goal in these preparations was to create and host events that would inform the general public about our organization, Ukrainian culture, and the genocide associated with the Great Famine of 1932-1933. These activities began in January 2005 when the Branch opened a month-long exhibit of Ukrainian Arts and Crafts at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan, New Jersey. The exhibit included five showcases, featuring unique and antique embroidered blouses, Kosiv woodcarvings, women’s neckwear (corals, gerdany, etc), and miniature icons. The centerpiece of the exhibit was dedicated to the victims of the famine in Ukraine and included books, newspapers, and the special November 2003 documentary issue of Our Life. Many people visited our exhibit. Interest was stimulated by worldwide media attention directed at Ukraine and its disputed presidential election. The exhibit also included a screening of the film Harvest of Despair on January 29, 2005. The large library meeting room was filled to capacity for this event, which concluded with a discussion ses sion. A number of guests expressed their shock about the events depicted in the film. Several com mented that they had not previously heard or seen information on the subject and expressed their amazement that information about a historic event of such proportions was not common knowledge. Such comments gave some indication that our goal of promoting public awareness had been achieved through this event. It is also noteworthy to comment that women of Ukrainian descent were among the attendees and showed interest in the UNWLA and Branch 98 in particular. Branch 98 is grateful to the Monmouth County Library, espe cially Ms. Flora Higgins, for co-sponsoring these events and for giving us the opportunity to share our heritage with our neighbors. Other events sponsored and hosted by Branch 98 during the year included a summer 16 “НАШ Е Ж ИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2005 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
