OUR LIFE Monthly , published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXII MAY 2005 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President In th e m o n th o f M a y , w e h o n o r th e B le sse d M o th e r w ith sp e cia l services, a n d o n th e seco n d S u n d a y in M a y , w e h o n o r o u r e a r th ly m o th ers. As I write my monthly message to UNWLA members and other readers of Our Life, I remember that this is the last “From the Desk of the President” I will write during this administration. As I look forward to the XXVII UNWLA Convention, I also look back at recent events that have had an impact on our organiza tion and our Ukrainian American community. As I have done each month during my tenure as president of the UNWLA, I would like to share with you some information about these recent events. Twenty-nine years ago, our organization established a museum in New York City with a modest col lection of artifacts and an ambitious commitment to create an institution that would feature, nurture, and pre serve Ukrainian culture and art. This year, with the official opening of the new Ukrainian Museum, we real ized a dream that began three decades ago. The grand opening featured the work of world renowned sculptor Alexander Archipenko. It was an event that drew hundreds of people and was described in great detail in nu merous publications. Oddly and sadly, each of the articles was written about the exhibit and the Ukrainian Museum as if they emerged without a history. Not one article mentioned that the museum began as an idea conceived, nurtured, and supported by the UNWLA. In this month's message, therefore, I would like to take a moment to remind all UNWLA members that Ukrainian Museum is part of our history. It is an achievement that we can be proud of. As president of the organization that founded the Ukrainian Museum, I was asked to speak at the opening of the new museum. I welcomed the guests attending the opening and praised those who had worked so hard to ensure the success of the splendid exhibit and the great, new monument to Ukrainian culture. Al though my remarks were brief, I did not focus entirely on current events and current achievements, for none of these achievements would have been possible without the vision and determination of one of my predeces sors, UNWLA President Ivanna Rozankowska. How proud she would have been to see how her dream has evolved! “НАШ Е ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2005 13
