STATE OF NEW YORK G e o r g e E . P ataki GOVERNOR May 27-30, 2005 Dear Friends: It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to send greetings and warm regards to the members of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America as you gather this weekend for your XXVII Triennial Convention, which also coincides with your organization’s 80th anniversary. New York State is fortunate to be home to a flourishing population of Ukrainian-Americans whose steadfast faith and love of country are the values that strengthen and unify them. Women are a uniquely dynamic force within the Ukrainian community and, indeed, they have always had multifaceted, yet well defined roles both here in America and in the homeland. A primary force behind the success of the Ukrainian community is your organization, which has served as a venue for cultural expression and sisterly allegiance for several generations of women in this country. Your members, who proudly work toward a mission of furthering appreciation and understanding of your beautiful heritage among people of all backgrounds, serve a truly valuable purpose. Beyond that, you are informed women of the twenty-first century whose advocacy on behalf of women's issues illustrates an important perspective and a broader role through which you can make a positive difference in the lives of Ukrainians around the world. This spirit of progress is alive and well today in Ukraine, best exemplified by the inspiring rallies of support during the recent election of a new president who is committed to addressing challenges facing a fledgling democracy. With support from all Ukrainian Americans - women, men and children - decades of harm imposed by a totalitarian regime can and will be reversed and lead to the well-being of Ukrainian people worldwide. The women of the UNWLA share a personal understanding of your peoples’ history that has called you to focus on many timely subjects over the past 80 years, and the continuation of such a vital dialogue has brought you here for the next several days. With the celebration of this milestone anniversary and XXVII Tnennial Convention, I encourage you to reflect upon your past successes and to uphold your wonderful role as a catalyst for growth, change and active involvement among Ukrainian-American women and families. Best wishes for an enjoyable and productive weekend and much future success. Very truly yours, E xecutive C hamber S tate C apitol A lbany 12224 http://www.state.ny.us ,w- 6“ “НАШ Е ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2005 5
