Standing in the center Lilia Hry- horovych, National Deputy of Verchovna Rada & president of UNWLA Iryna Kurowyckyj. The inauguration of President Viktor Yushchenko was held on January 23, 2005. It was a historic moment, the culmination of many years of Ukraine's struggle for true autonomy and absolute sovereignty. Fittingly, the inauguration ceremony was attended by heads of state of other sovereign nations and by an in ternational community of diplomats whose presence signaled world affirmation of an election fairly won and respect for the president chosen by a nation longing for positive and proactive changes. Among those attending the inauguration were leaders of Ukrainian Diaspora organizations and other individuals whose support of Ukraine merited an invitation from Ukraine's inaugural committee. Such invita tions were highly prized, many issued only after the intervention of members of Viktor Yushchenko's Our Ukraine Party or influential members of the Verkhovna Rada. As president of the UNWLA, I was among those invited at the request of Verkhovna Rada Deputy Lila Hryhorovych. The invitation was faxed to me on the morning of January 18; I left for Ukraine that after noon, my journey facilitated by the personal attention of Mr. Mykola Kravets, General Manager of AeroSvit USA. The courteous and helpful staff of AeroSvit made every aspect of my journey enjoyable and pleasant, both at the airports in Kyiv and New York and during the flights to Ukraine and the United States. It was a great honor to be invited to the inauguration; it was indeed a most memorable moment in the history of Ukraine. I will not be writing about the ceremony because all of you have seen the official reports of what transpired on television, on the Internet, in magazines, and in newspapers. I will, therefore, focus on НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2005 13
