It is the oldest Ukrainian women's organization in the history of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora. The UNWLA is guided in its activities by the principles of Christian ethics, religious tolerance, and political nonpartisanship. Our organization also supports the principles of human rights. The UNWLA was a founding member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and worked with the organization from its inception. At the 13th UCCA Congress, serious discord within the Ukrainian-American community, which had been fomenting for many years, led to a split in the UCCA. Representatives of 26 member organizations walked out of the Congress proceedings. Among those expressing their intent to dissolve their connections with the UCCA at that time was the UNWLA. In a letter that formally announced the UNWLA's position to UCCA leadership, UNWLA President Iwanna Rozankowsky wrote about her organization's concerns. Like other Ukrainian organizations, the UNWLA was dissatisfied with the nature of the proceedings of the 13th UCCA Congress, during which certain political factions were thought to have ignored democratic principals by not allowing other member organizations, including the UNWLA, to voice their grievances.
