Letters /^ f Giving and Receiving In June, we received a letter from Julia Stoiko, president of UNWLA Branch 58 (Olena Teliha) of the Detroit Regional Council. The letter was filled with news about recent and upcoming branch activities; enclosed was an annotated clipping of an article and a bookmark. It was an interesting combination, a repre sentation in microcosm of what the UNWLA is about: giving and receiving. The bookmark is about volunteering. There is a short poem by some anonymous writer who captures the spirit of volunteerism with a few brief words: "I'm there when spirits need a lift . . . I hold the hands of those in pain . . . my presence here provides relief." Simple words that describe small deeds that often make a big difference to someone. Mrs. Stoiko begins her letter with a descrip tion of giving. On the first Thursday of every month, members of Branch 58 attend liturgy at a local nursing home with several Ukrainian patients and residents. The liturgy is celebrated by clergy from the Immacu late Conception Catholic Church and St. Josaphat's; branch members sing responses and visit patients, bringing gifts during the Christmas and Easter holi days. It was branch member Joanna Kulchesky who arranged for services by Ukrainian priests, a thoughtful way to bring comfort to those in need of comfort. The letter goes on to report about other branch activities, each of them focused on volunteering time or money or encouragement or moral support to others. It also mentions that two of the branch members have recently achieved a milestone: 50 years in the UN WLA. They are Jean Fitzsimmons and Olga Halushka, and each will soon be receiving a pin to mark the anni versary, a small token of appreciation and respect, a badge of honor reserved for those who have contrib uted their time and talents to the UNWLA for half a century. The clipping was a write up about another Branch 58 member, Olga Dubriwnyj Solovey, who recently received the Warren (Michigan) Cultural Commission Fine Arts Award, presented in recogni tion of her contributions to the community in the field of music. In a brief note typed below the article, Mrs. Stoiko writes that Olga Solovey "has been Br. 58 sec retary for some years, and is always willing to have her Zoloti Dzvony Ukrainian Village Choir perform dur ing the annual senior residents' picnic." The letter, which was addressed to the English language editor of Our Life, closes with the following: "I encourage all of our members to read Our Life . . . many thanks." It made this editor's day. Acknowledgments In the March 2004 issue of Our Life , we pub lished a review of "Who We Are: Ukrainian Catho lics," contributed by Theodora Turula. We recently received a letter from Slavomyr Pihut, the editor of the book, and the Immaculate Conception Anniversary Committee (Palatine, Illinois) under whose auspices the book was published, thanking us for printing Ms. Turula's review. A check in the amount of $60, desig nated for Our Life Press Fund , was enclosed along with good wishes for continued success. The editors gratefully acknowledge the generous contribution to the Press Fund and the kind words. The editors of Our Life welcome comments and news contributed by readers, UNWLA mem bers, branches, and regional councils. While we regret that we cannot personally acknowledge all letters we receive, we are grateful to those who take the time to write and share with us their news and views.
