OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. L X I J U L Y - A U G U S T 2004 Editor: T A M A R A S T A D N Y C H E N K O Happy 4th of July America! Happy 13th anniversary of Ukraine's independence! From the Desk of the President Remembering Ronald Reagan Am erica has recently bid farewell to former President Ronald Reagan, an honorable and decent human be ing who will be remembered by this nation as a leader whose optimism and courage made us proud to be citizens o f the United States. In a political environment often populated by mere politicians, President Reagan was a states man. A good friend to the Am erican-Ukrainian community, he understood the nature o f the Soviet regime and rec ognized it as an evil empire that trampled on human rights and human dignity. It was during his tenure as president o f the United States that the walls finally came down, and it was his strong belief in what is right that made this possible. M ost o f us watched the funeral ceremony for the former president on television. It w as an unforgettable ceremony, a patriotic tribute to a true patriot who loved his country and served it well. W e were touched by the solemn music and by the eulogies that attested to his generosity and his far-reaching interests. W e were touched by the sight o f the former president's horse following the casket, an empty saddle and boots turned backward in the stirrups, reminders o f his love o f the natural splendor o f the W est in which he chose to make his home. The statements that were made by distinguished speakers o f different faiths at the funeral were especially moving. Faith in God has played an important role in the history o f this country. W hile the First Amendment o f the United States Constitution provides for the separation o f church and state, our Constitution also provides each indi vidual with religious freedom and the right to worship. This right has been upheld in the United States for more than two hundred years and many o f our strongest presidents had strong religious beliefs that shaped their character and helped them make decisions that were just and moral in difficult times. It is a tradition that hails back to George Washington. A t the end o f his swearing-in ceremony, the nation’s first president added, "So help me G od." It is a tradition that is practiced in the United States by citizens o f all creeds and is reinforced even by secular sym bols o f this great country. W hen the United States began to print its own currency, the words "In God w e trust" appeared on the bills. The words remain on the country's currency to this day. For President Ronald Reagan, as for many o f his predecessors, these were words to live by. W e mourn his passing and we express our sincere condolences to former First Lad y N ancy Reagan and to the president's children. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2004 13
