UNWLA Branch 4 Hosts "Vesilya" by Tyrsa Pavlak If you have ever been involved in the planning of a wedding for a family member or friend, you un derstand the enormity of the task. There seem to be a million details that have to be taken into consideration, and you dare not omit even one. Can you imagine what it must be like to plan a wedding for seventeen brides? That is the task that Branch 4 of Central New Jersey faced while planning its annual fundraiser, which was held on Sunday, November 2, 2003. Branch members rose to the challenge and the event was executed with great success. The theme of the fundraiser was weddings. Aptly titled "Vesilya," it focused on an unusual presentation of bridal gowns of different eras. The event was held at the small reception hall of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, tastefully decorated by our talented branch members with cream-colored sheer draperies, artfully hung along the walls and finished with sprays of graceful English ivy. Round tables were covered with white, linen-like tablecloths, each sporting a small silver candelabra centerpiece decorated with roses. The guests seated at each table whose birthday was closest to the date of the event won the centerpiece. As with any wedding feast, Vesilya began with a traditional cocktail hour. Champagne and hors d'oeuvres were served by Charles Taraskewicz, who was dressed in his finest tuxedo and is the husband of branch president Luba Siryj. While sipping and munching, guests were encouraged to tour the displays of prizes that were to be raffled off during the pro gram. A ticket for the door prize was stapled to each guest's program book; an additional Grand Prize, a grand basket of assorted cheer, was offered with the purchase of special tickets. Grateful appreciation must be extended to branch member Oksana Bokalo, who collected all donations for the prizes and presented them to winners in a tasteful and artistic manner. A delicious wedding feast was prepared by the Sisterhood of St. Ansrew's Church. After the meal, guests enjoyed a musical interlude. The performers were Bohdanna Hnatyck and Vera Melnyck, recent immigrants from Ukraine. Both ladies are members of the church choir of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in New Brunswick. At last it was time for the brides to show off their wedding finery. One by one they were escorted from the stage by our "starosta," Mr. Taraskewicz, and presented by our president, Luba Siryj. The show be 16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2004 Marina Shapovalenko in a gown belonging to Kaya Nynka who was married in Hunter, New York (2001).
