Dear UNWLA members and readers: I would like to begin this month's issue of Our Life with a special invitation to help us recognize the accomplishments of young Ukrainian-American women in our communities. The UNWLA Executive Committee is preparing to continue our organization's tradition of honoring “Young Women Achievers.” The winner of this prestigious award will be announced at the XXVII UNWLA Convention, to be held in Albany, NY, in 2005. To accomplish our mission in selecting the newest Young Woman Achiever, we are requesting your help and cooperation. We are seeking women whose exceptional achievements deserve recognition, and we invite you to find and nominate suitable candidates for this award. Candidates must be of Ukrainian heritage, bom in the United States, and under 40 years of age. Membership in the UNWLA is not required. A biography of each eligible candidate should be submitted (not to exceed 2 double-spaced pages) together with a 2 Уг by З-inch photograph. The biography should be in English, but we would also appreciate a Ukrainian translation if possible. If available, please forward copies of articles or press releases or other published material about the candidate as well. A panel of judges has been selected to assist the Executive Committee in reviewing the submitted ma terials and in choosing the best candidate. Each of our judges is a distinguished member of the Ukrainian- American community. Several are former Young Women Achievers. They are Roma Sochan-Hadzewych, editor in chief of The Ukrainian Weekly (1984 award recipient); Nadia Komamyckyj-McConnell, president of U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (1984 award recipient); Dr. Oksana Skypakewych Xenos, UNWLA Parliamentarian (1987 award recipient); and Virlana Tkacz, founder and director of the Yara Arts Group (1990 award recipi ent). Also invited to sit on our panel of judges is Dr. Joanna Ratych, Auditing Committee Chairwoman of the UNWLA. We urge you to begin the search for suitable candidates in your city or region as soon as possible. All applications and related materials must be received at UNWLA headquarters no later than September 30, 2004. For your convenience, we have provided an official application form (in English and Ukrainian) in this month's issue of Our Life. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance in this exciting venture. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2004 11
