OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women ’s League of America Vol. LX OCTOBER 2003 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO National Council o f Women /U SA proxy president Iryna K urow yckyj follow ing the US flag at the Opening Ceremony o f the International Council o f Women General Assem bly. FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT he 30th General Assembly of the International Council of Women was held in Perth, Australia, from August 31 to September 9 2003. The NCW / US delegation consisted of the following: Dr. Sorosh Roshan, a can didate for vice president of ICW; Maria Arias one of the UN representatives; and Iryna Kurowyckyj, the United Nation Liaison for the International Council of Women and proxy president of the National Council of Women/US. I arrived in Perth on Saturday, after a long series of flights via Paris and Singapore. Just a few days earlier, I had been in Kyiv, attending the Ukrainian World Congress Quinquennial Conference and my thoughts after so much travel were divided between memories of my experiences in Ukraine and an anticipation of what I would see in the Land Down Under. Thus, after a short rest I decided to look though the telephone book for a listing for a Ukrainian Catholic Church. I did not find much under Ukrainian at all, but there was a listing for a Ukrainian Orthodox Church. I called and was disappointed that no one answered. My next telephone call was to Mr. Bohdan Mykytiuk, president of Ukrainians in Western Australia, whose number was given to me at the UWC Conference in Kyiv by one of the delegates from Australia, Mr. George Mencinsky. When I called, I learned that Mr. Mykytiuk was out of town, but I did get the address of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the time the services were being held. Fifteen minutes later I received a call from Zirka Dos- chak, president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Perth, Australia, who had called to issue an invitation to me and the national president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Australia, Kristina Syvenka Bailey, to see the sites of Perth that evening. She also offered to take me to the Ukrainian church the following morning. On our way to church, Ms. Doschak informed me that the National Council of Women of Ukraine delega tion was arriving that same morning and would be met at the airport by Ms. Bailey, Mr. Mykytiuk, and Kristina Syvenka Bailey. After the church services, everyone would be invited to meet with the delegates from Ukraine and the United States. The Ukrainian delegation consisted of six women: the president of the National Council of Ukraine, Iryna Holubjeva; the Minister of Family and Youth, Valentina Dovzhenko; the president of Soyuz Ukrai nok of Ukraine and Verkhovna Rada deputy, Lilia Hryhorovych; and three others that came as observers. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2003 7
