United Nations representatives fo r International Council o f Women: Eleonore Hauer-Rona (Vienna), Em m y Galama (Netherlands), Iryna K urow yckyj (New York). During the church service, Father V. Kalyneckyj formally welcomed the UNWLA president to his parish and extended his good wishes for the success of the ICW General Assembly. Later, at a gathering in the church hall, the delegates from Ukraine were given the opportunity to address the community. Since it was the first time that anyone from Ukraine had visited Perth, those assembled in the church hall were very interested in hearing what they had to say. They were also interested in hearing about the UNWLA and I briefly explained how the UNWLA was established and the political circumstances that had led Ukrainian American women to create an organization that would serve as a means of helping their enslaved sisters in Ukraine. That evening, opening ceremonies of the ICW General Assembly were held in Perth Town Hall. In a mag nificent flag processional, each president or proxy president walked behind her country's flag, which were carried by scouts down the side aisles of the hall. The flag processional was arranged in alphabetical order and it was with great pride that I watched as Ukraine's flag passed me, followed by the flag of the United States, my adopted home land. It was extremely heartwarming to see that Ukrainian women, long oppressed and long dependent on represen tation by the UNWLA at such international events, were finally representing themselves. It was also wonderful to see the Ukrainian flag, long suppressed in its own country, waving proudly among the flags of other nations of the world. As president of the organization that had struggled to make this a reality, I was proud that the mission begun so long ago had been accomplished. An official welcome to delegates was offered by Judith Parker, president of NCW Australia, from Her Ex cellency Marlene Jeffery, and from the Honorable Amanda Veinstone, Minister of Family and Community Serv ices and assistant to the Prime Minister for the Status of Women. International Council of Women President Pnina Herzog was the featured speaker at this event. After the opening ceremony, delegates attended an informal recep tion after which the Ukrainian delegation, the president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Australia, and I went out to dinner— a truly momentous celebration during which Ukrainian women from three continents shared a quiet and intimate moment of solidarity. The following morning, delegates assembled in the ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel for a meeting that very closely followed the approved agenda. Reports were presented by the Board and Standing Committees, along with UN liaison reports from New York, Vienna, and Belgium. As UN Liaison from New York, I expressed my grati tude to the National Council of Women of Western Australia for hosting this event. I shared with ICW members the sad news of the death of Alicia Paolazzi, a generous supporter of the NCW/US and the ICW. I also shared some thoughts on the 47th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which was held in March of this year. I reminded ICW delegates that some of the issues discussed by the commission are still unresolved, especially the issues of human rights and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls. Unfortunately, as the 47th session of the CSW concluded its work, it did not adopt its draft on these issues, as a consensus could not be reached-a sad state of affairs in a world where women are too often the victims of powerful and greedy exploiters. I closed my presentation with a plea to ICW members to continue to work at every level of their respective socie ties to create a safe and healthy environment for every woman and girl living on this earth. 8 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2003 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
