"The World of the 2 1st Century Woman" Weekend Conference One Event — Two Goals It is not a secret that U N W L A membership is diminishing, nor is it a secret that the average woman in Ukraine is lacking moral support. Can some head w ay be made in attempting to solve each o f these prob lems? Branch 95 o f Poughkeepsie/Kerhonkson, N Y is throwing itself into a grand effort to address both is sues. B y bringing together Ukrainian Am erican women, both U N W L A members and non-members, this ambitious group is attempting to take proactive steps to create workable solutions. One o f the reasons w e cannot seem to interest younger, professional wom en to join our ranks is that U N W L A has an image o f an organization o f “ more mature” women. “ Mature” is entirely relative and does not necessarily connote age but rather a frame o f mind. It is to dispel old misconceptions and provide an im portant reality check that Branch 95 is planning “ The W orld o f the 2 1 st Century W om an” weekend confer ence to be held on April 4 - 6th at the U N A estate in Kerhonkson, N Y . Relevant issues that affect the eve ryday life o f today’ s wom an, whatever her age, will be discussed. Saturday's agenda will feature sessions on communication skills, financial and legal fitness for women, getting ahead in a m an’s world, stress man agement, transitions in life, elder care, and other topics o f concern to women. On Sunday morning, we will focus on issues that directly affect the ethnic Ukrainian wom an - from the com plexity o f functioning as a pro fessional in two worlds to the challenges faced by the “ fourth w ave” wom an, from the trafficking o f women to the problem o f wom en’ s health in Ukraine. O f criti cal importance w ill be the session devoted to the chal lenges o f leading a national organization and the future o f our own organization - the U N W L A . Each o f these sessions will be led by a profes sional Ukrainian wom an from our area. During the conference, there w ill also be a book signing by a no table Ukrainian Am erican novelist, entertainment by a leading Ukrainian Canadian comedienne, and an art jpxhibit featuring the works o f several Ukrainian Am erican female artists. In designing this conference, the organizers have worked to create an event that serves a special purpose. It is our hope that w e can come together as 2 1 st century wom en to share our ideas and strengths and extend those to the common thread that brings us together - our common Ukrainian background. It is our vision that many o f the n o n -U N W LA members who attend the conference will discover that our or ganization is an organization that is truly worth join ing. This is our first goal, and w e feel that it is a goal that can be achieved. “ The W orld o f the 2 1 st Century W om an” W eekend Conference will present a wonder ful opportunity for all wom en who share their common background to network. It will also provide a w ay for us to share our talents and resourcefulness for the common good o f our people, to share our respect for each other as accomplished wom en, and to join hands as we try to make a difference. And we can make a difference! The plight o f the wom an in Ukraine has not improved in the past decade but has actually deteriorated with the collaps ing health care system. The problems created by the Chom obyl disaster will last for generations and con tinue to have a deleterious effect on Ukraine. Adding to this suffering has been the scourge o f A ID S , which has reached epidemic proportions in Ukraine. Because o f the severity o f the A ID S crisis and the lingering effects o f Chom obyl, w om en’ s preventive health care “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2003 15
