OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America V ol. L X F E B R U A R Y 2003 Editor: T A M A R A S T A D N Y C H E N K O Happy 95th Birthday to Маїу V. Beck A woman, a leader, an inspiration. The Ukrainian National Women’s Lea salutes the newly established Br of the Philadelphia Regional Council. We wish you many happy and productive years in our midst. FROM THE DESK OPTHE PRESIDENT Each year the Commission on the Status o f Women holds a sessions in the month o f March. This year's forty- seventh session o f the C S W will be held from March 3 to March 15 at the United Nations. It will focus on two thematic issues: • participation and access o f women to the media, and information and communication technologies and the impact on their use as an instrument for the advancement and empowerment o f women; and • women’s human rights and the elimination o f all forms o f violence against women and girls as defined in the Beijing Platform o f Action and the outcome document o f the Special Session for the General Assembly entitled “ Women: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century.” I would like to share some thoughts on one o f the preparatory meetings for the upcoming session during which the first topic was addressed by a group o f experts convened by the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women, in cooperation with the United Nations Department o f Public Information and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. Am ong the issues discussed by these experts was the rapid pace o f technological change in the area o f media and communications and the impact o f this change on women. It is no surprise that they con firmed that women without the proper technological skills will not be able to function to their fullest potential. This was an issue previously addressed by the Beijing Platform for Action and Beijing + 5 special session o f the General Assembly, held in June 2000, which recognized the increased opportunities created by information and commu nication technologies for women. The meeting addressed several policy approaches as enabling frameworks: access, em ployment, decision-making, and the impact o f the new technologies on media professions and media content. Today, women continue to be marginalized in a field o f technology that is critical to their advancement and empowerment. Skills in technology will help to establish gender equality and will change the image o f women. Cur rently, that image is sometimes distorted in the media, and that leads to violence against women. A comprehensive knowledge o f how to use the new technology can make a great difference. For example, by using the new technology, the N G O ’s at the U N are able to track down documents, speeches and other valuable materials that provide critically needed information for the groups they serve. This new technology is the wave o f the future and we must, if we are to be empowered, learn this skill. Gender should not be a barrier and nei ther should age. It is important to note that our organization, which has a history o f empowering women, is no stranger to the technological advances that have become so important in the modern world. W e have, for example, a web site that is accessible to women all over the world. Informative materials about the U N W L A , its activities, its achievements, and its НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2003 13
