measure up or is peppered with Russian. Is this not working against our own self-interests? Hadassah also has chapters for “ younger” professional women under the age o f 35 , wom en who share a common personal theme. Hadassah sponsors “ special interest groups” that can provide networking for wom en o f common professional interests. It maintains a career counseling office to assist students in developing a career path. W hile attending the aforementioned Summit 2002, several college age young ladies spoke openly to me, saying, “ D on’t forget about us. Com e to the schools and tell us about yourself, plan some activities for us, include us in your affairs, ask us to volunteer; and, when we come o f age, the chances o f our joining will be much greater.” O f course, Hadassah is so much larger and wealthier than we are, that it can do all o f this on a much grander scale; but we can certainly be gin thinking along these lines and start developing this necessary path for the near future. Proactive steps such as these should and must be taken if w e are to continue and flourish. Another challenge our organization faces is that o f funding. W e must develop new channels to help us continue our indispensable work. One important possibility is that o f grant writing. There are large sums o f money available to non-profit organizations either through government or private sources. They need to be found, examined and tapped. Should we succeed in recruiting this “ younger” wom an into our midst, she could be most helpful in pursuing this line o f fundraising. Our traditional fundraising methods cannot continue forever. H ow many more platsky will our younger group o f wom en be willing to bake? I have had the opportunity o f speaking to members o f two branches who do most o f their fundraising through the sale o f pyrohy and Easter baked goods. The younger ladies clearly stated that, once their mothers stop this activity, it would definitely come to a halt. And end it will. This is w hy finding alternate and sub stantial means o f supporting our endeavors is abso lutely necessary! Another valid point we must address, one which has been discussed repeatedly at various meet ings, is that o f funding public relations and member ship drives for the U N W L A . The U N W L A must de velop a fund to promote itself. Historically, we have focused mainly on helping Ukraine - this was the core and being o f our organization. However, we need to become a little “ selfish” and think about our organiza tion. For if we do not grow as an organization, neither will our efforts to help Ukraine and Ukrainians. W e need to set aside some o f our funds for printing attrac tive, well-written informational booklets about our selves, to develop our website, to upgrade computer systems and databases on our membership. A ll o f these are essential if w e are to m ove forward with the times and we M U S T m ove forward. O f course, membership drives can encompass an entire separate discussion. I must add one thing, however, and that is that each member has a daughter, daughter-in-law, granddaughter or sister who does not belong to the U N W L A . I f we cannot, by our example and through the great satisfaction we experience from our successes, entice these wom en to join our organi zation, then w e have absolutely no right to criticism o f any sort. If each one o f us were successful in bringing in just one new member, our membership would dou ble. I believe that if we sincerely welcom e and respect every wom an o f Ukrainian descent for her individual talents, membership will be less o f a problem. A s a community organization and a sisterhood o f Ukrainian wom en, w e have so much to be proud of! But in order for us to preserve this generous and out standing organization and flourish, we must adapt to today’ s wom an and to today’s society. Let us each m ove forward and take one step at a time towards fur ther success. Thank you. Editor's Note: Marianna Zajac is President o f U N W L A Regional Council for Central N ew York. The material published here is the text o f the speech Ms. Zajac pre sented at the U N W L A 's 26th Convention in Sarasota, Florida. For additional information on Summit 2002, see Ms. Zajac's article on the conference, published in the M ay issue o f O ur Life. Correction. W e recently received a letter from former U N W L A Social Welfare Committee Chair Nadia Shmigel, who pointed out an inadvertent omission in the report on the X X VIth U N W L A Convention (Part II), which was published in the July-August issue o f O ur Life. On page 19 was a reference to concurrent afternoon sessions held on Sunday after noon, M ay 26, 2002, including a seminar presented by the Social Welfare Committee. While the seminar given by the Social Welfare Committee was arranged and moderated by Mrs. Shmigel, the featured speakers were Anna Macielinski and Irene Repczuk D Alessio. Ms. Macielinski's presentation was The A doption o f Children fro m Ukraine: M aintaining Cultural Identity. Ms. D A llesio spoke on Services fo r the Elderly. The seminar was well attended, attesting to great in terest in each o f the topics presented. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, each speaker had only 15 minutes to present her excellent material and there was no time for questions from the audience. W e thank Mrs. Shmigel for writing and we apologize to both speakers for the omission. 18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2002 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
