FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT This month, dear readers, we cannot help but recall the tragic events that horrified Am erica a year ago and the disasters that Ukraine has endured in just the last two months. And yet, we must be optimistic and look towards a brighter future. W hile we mourn the dead with heavy hearts, we must celebrate life and the achievements o f the living. Thus, I begin this month's letter with congratulatory messages to two branches which have recently cele brated special anniversaries. The U N W L A National Board congratulates Branch 27 o f Hamtramck, Michigan (named after Olha Basarab) on their 70 th anniversary celebration. W e also congratulate Branch 4 7 o f Rochester, N ew York, (named after Lesya Ukrainka) on their 50 th anniversary. W e thank all members o f these branches for their years o f dedication to our organization and for their hard work for the good o f people all over the world. E ve ryone that your helping hands touched has been given a special gift, and you have made a difference in many lives. God Bless all o f you. W e wish you many more years o f happiness in our U N W L A family. A s most o f you know, every three years the U N W L A publishes a Convention Book, which covers the three-year period from convention to convention. The X X V Ith Convention Book was dedicated to the celebration o f the 7 5 th anniversary o f the U N W L A and includes many historical references to previous U N W L A conventions. This book is good source o f information for every member o f our organization and contains interesting articles in Ukrainian and English. The cost o f the book is $15 .0 0 (plus shipping). Our monthly publication, which has a long and illustrious history, is suffering from financial difficulties as postal rates and publication costs continue to rise. UNWLA Social Welfare Committee Seeks Financial Support for Disaster Relief for Children in Lviv, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk In Ju ly and August 2002, tragedy struck both eastern and western Ukraine, and the U N W L A grieves with the Ukrainian people and with members o f Soyuz Ukrainok Ukrainy. The air show disaster in L viv and the mining accidents in Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk left many children seriously injured or orphaned. Responding to these crises, the Social W elfare Committee o f the U N W L A is launching a campaign to provide medical and financial assistance to the innocent victims. W e appeal to U N W L A members and to all members o f the Ukrainian-American community to help us help the children. Please open your hearts and give generously.
