OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America V ol. L I X O C T O B E R 2002 Editor: T A M A R A S T A D N Y C H E N K O The Executive Committee, National Board and all members of the UNWLA extend warm greetings to the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations with best wishes for a successful and productive Vlll Congress The UNWLA National Board salu tes Branch 13 o f Chester, Pennsylvania (nam ed in honor o f Uliana Kravchenko) on the occasion o f its 50 th anniversary an d exten ds congratulations to Branch 12 o f Cleveland, Ohio (nam ed in honor o f Olena Pchilka) on the occasion o f its 3 5 th anniversary. FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Dear readers and U N W L A members, The August-Septem ber 200 2 issue o f Club Women , the official publication o f the General Federation o f W om en's Clubs, contains an interesting statement that reflects the organization's purpose. The G F W C was founded as a w ay for wom en to educate themselves about the world that lies outside their homes and thus improve the qual ity o f life for themselves and their communities. The U N W L A is an associate member o f the G F W C since 1948. It was the first ethnic member to join the organization, was founded on the same principles as the G F W C , and has accomplished its aims through the 7 7 years o f its existence. W e have been responsible for many improvements in the lives o f our people in our native Ukraine and in the lives o f our people here in the Diaspora. The G F W C prides itself on being the founder o f 7 5 percent o f A m erica’s libraries. The U N W L A prides it self on being the founder o f the Ukrainian Museum in N ew York City, one the most prestigious institutions de voted to preserving the cultural heritage o f a nation to be established beyond the borders o f that nation. Since founding the Museum, which will shortly be m oving into its new home, our members have supported it generously. Our organization has also donated the Ukrainian Museum to the Ukrainian community at large, as a symbol o f the community's success in keeping Ukrainian heritage alive throughout the years. The U N W L A has m any similar accomplishments, but it is not the aim o f this article to talk about our ac complishments. Instead, m y purpose here is to show how valuable our members are to the organization and how valuable the organization is to our members. It is also an organization that is in need o f transfusion, because old and tired blood is often anemic. It needs to be revitalized and energized. The U N W L A is at a period where some Branches are celebrating their 50 th anniversaries. Some have de cided that they are too tired to continue to be members o f the U N W L A . I have met some o f the wom en who feel this w ay and this situation saddens me. I was even more saddened when I saw that some o f these wom en are nei ther too old nor too tired to continue being viable and active members o f our organization and I tried to discover what their other reasons (real reasons) were. Som e few said they could not afford the annual dues. Some said they could not find the time. Some said they did not have the strength. Some said that the organization is full o f cliques “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2002 9
