Come and Dance by Irene Demkiw MC Olia Chodoba-Fryz and Volodymyr Fryz Julia Burij, Museum Chair Olha Paprosky, and Social Welfare Chair Yaroslava Kovach Irene Demkiw On October 13, 2001, UNWLA Branch 73 sponsored a fund raiser to promote and benefit the Ukrainian Museum in New York City. The “ Come and Dance” event was held at the Ukrainian-American Club in Southport, Coimecticut. Posters from the Ukrainian Museum’s exhibits adorned the walls; literature about the museum and about the UNWLA had been placed on all tables. Our special guest of the evening was Jerry Parris, who has been called America’s most knowledgeable and talented dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher. Mr. Parris has performed at major dance events all over the world and has appeared as featured dancer at Radio City Music Hall. A teacher’s teacher and dancer’s dancer, he has hosted his own television shows and has choreographed commercials for major studios. At the “ Come and Dance” evening, Mr. Parris gave guests an opportunity to learn something about Latin dancing. To everyone’s delight, he taught several steps of the merenge and the intricate side steps of the salsa. For an hour and a half, Latin music filled the hall and everyone practiced their new dance steps. Refreshments, donated by Branch 73 members, were served. There were a wide variety of kanapky and tasty desserts. On a more serious theme, Roma Hayda, President of Branch 73, addressed the issue of the museum, the main reason for the fundraiser. The museum ensures that Ukrainian heritage and culture in the United States will be preserved in an institution that adheres to the highest museum standards, and Ms. Hayda encouraged all those attending to enroll as museum members. Approximately 100 people, representing different waves of Ukrainian immigration to the United States, attended the event. For our community, it was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, have some fun, and learn something about the UNWLA and the Ukrainian Museum. Many who attended asked us to host another similar event soon.
