OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America Vol. LIX JA N U A RY 2002 Editor: TA M A RA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT CHRISTMAS GREETINGS TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE BY THE OLD CALENDER As usual, we begin with the monthly message from the UNWLA president. But this month’s message is somewhat unusual because it is the last message that comes to you from UNWLA headquarters at 108 Second Avenue. We are, dear readers, in the process of relocating to our new home, which will be located at 203 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10003. During the month of January, we will be busy moving documents, furniture, artwork, and assorted UNWLA paraphernalia that has accumulated over the years. It is a monumental task that will require much time and much effort. The move to our new home will also, unfortunately, create some unavoidable difficulties for those who wish to communicate with us as they have in the past, either by stopping in to see us or by mail. In January, we will be conducting much of the business of the UNWLA and Our Life by telephone. If you have any questions regarding UNWLA business, please call the UNWLA President at 1 917- 658-0139 (cell) or 212 477-0039. To reach Our Life, please call editor-in-chief Irena Chaban at 212-982-2889. We apologize for any inconvenience and ask for your understanding and patience. Our “homelessness” during this period of transition is a small price to pay for the comfort of knowing that our new home will offer us the stability and permanence we have longed for. As Ukraine’s bard Taras Shevchenko wrote, we will at long last be masters of our own house - “v svoyi khati, svoya pravda, і syla і volia.” We look forward to welcoming you as our guests once the move is completed. It is a beautiful time of the year. The air is crisp and cool; holiday festivities abound. Despite the hardships of the last year, we look ahead with anticipation and hope. This hopeful note resounded in the pages of the Christmas issue of Our Life and we want to share that same hopeful note with you in this issue. On one page of this issue is a very special letter we received from the White House, an answer to the UNWLA’s letter to President George W. Bush following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The President’s letter stresses the strength and unity of the people of this country, the need for justice, and the need to treat others with dignity and respect. We honor these ideals and, as Americans of Ukrainian descent, we are proud that this is a country which can face terrible times and terrible events with so much courage and fortitude. This is truly a country where one has reason to hope and the opportunity to live a wonderful life. Other pages of this issue are devoted to the important achievements of Ukrainian scholars in the international academic arena; on others you will find information about important accomplishments and events within our organization. We have some expert advice on coping with stress and achieving emotional well-being and some festive recipes that will help all of us celebrate during the holiday season. Finally, I would like to offer a special word of thanks to all of the authors who have contributed their time and talents to write the articles and features that appear on these pages. HAPPY NEW YEAR
