News From a Distance: A Report from UNWLA Branch 3 of Phoenix, Arizona by Olha Slyvka Branch 3 members with U N W LA President Iryna Kurowyckyj. Branch 3 of Phoenix, Arizona, is one o f the “distant branches” in the UNWLA, meaning that it is far from any o f the densely populated Ukrainian centers in the United States. Distant or not, the branch is very active and participates in all the activities o f Phoenix’s small Ukrainian community, cultivating and nurturing Ukrainian traditions and heritage. The young and dynamic branch president is Christina Boyko, one o f those women that every Branch wishes to have. Under her direction, our branch has enriched the Ukrainian community in Phoenix in many ways. During the year, for examp le, the branch offers diverse programs for its mem bers and the community at large. Some are educa tional; some are entertaining. All are well attended and the branch members deserve much credit for planning activities and hosting special events. Among the many special programs were presentations by Dr. Natalia Bilyk on skin cancer and breast cancer, with an emphasis on prevention, detection, and cure. At many branch events, guests are entertained by the musical talents o f pianist Anna Dvorska and accordionist Uliana Martudel. On May 20, 2001, Branch 3 celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding o f the UNWLA. The celebration was held at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and featured the grand opening o f an exhibit o f historical and national costumes, ceramics, woodcarvings, embroidered arti facts and Ukrainian Easter eggs that will be per manently displayed at the Cultural Center. Father John Kondrasevych from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church blessed the exhibit. All those who contributed their time and effort to make the exhibit possible were officially thanked by branch members and their president. Among the distinguished guests to visit the exhibit were His Excellency Ambassador Yurij Shcherbak, Mrs. Shcherbak, and other attendees of the Medical Convention that was held in Phoenix. Each year, Branch 3 holds a Fall Dance where community members o f all ages have the op portunity to meet and make new friends. In Decem ber 2001, the Branch hosted an “Andriyivskyj Vechir”, another event designed to connect diaspora Ukrainians with the traditions o f their homeland. Branch 3 fulfills all o f its obligations to UNWLA headquarters and participates in many UNWLA charitable endeavors. In 2001, we sent $2,000.00 for victims o f the flooding in Zakarpattia. We also sent 15 boxes o f food and clothing worth $3,000.00. An additional $1,000.00 was sent to the Holy Family Monastery in Lviv. Our Welfare Chairs Myroslava Mychayliv and Rosalia Tymchy- na deserve the credit for soliciting donations and making arrangements for transportation o f the goods collected. To end the year, Branch 3 held a holiday celebration where members exchanged gifts and ended a successful year in a pleasant and harmon ious atmosphere. {Translatedfrom Ukrainian.)
