Upon arrival, each branch member was presented with a beautiful commemorative ribbon de signed and embroidered for this special occasion by Mrs. Lydia Malanchuk. The banquet was formally opened by branch president Luba Nowak, who warmly welcomed branch members, their families, and guests. Reverend Walter Rybicky of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church gave the blessing. The mistress of ceremonies for the event was Mrs. Stefanie Krywaczuk Mroz who spoke of the his tory of Branch 36, which is the first UNWLA branch in Chicago. Organized by Mrs. Anna Brudny during the Great Depression, the branch began a long tradition of service. Through the years, members have helped new immigrants, political prisoners, orphans, the eld erly, and Ukrainians in need here in America and elsewhere in the world. Mrs. Mroz also recited branch accomplish ments in more recent years, specifically those occur ring since the branch celebrated its 65th anniversary. Since that time, Branch 36 has shipped 82 packages of clothing, food, medicines, toys, and other goods to Ukraine. The Branch has also donated $2,100 to assist the flood victims in Zakarpattia, $1,754 to the UN WLA's Milk and Roll program, and $1,250 to the UNWLA Scholarship program. During the banquet, branch members honored Mrs. Helen Kruff, a witness to the history of the branch from its earliest days. Mrs. Kruff was the first secretary of Branch 36 and is now a charter member. Alexandra and Katrina Mroz, daughters of the mistress of ceremonie, presented Mrs. Kruff with a bouquet of roses and everyone sang a heartfelt chorus of Mnohaya Lita in recognition of her 70 years of service to the UNWLA and to wish her a happy 90th birthday. The branch president then thanked all current branch members for their devoted work for the organi zation and expressed her hope that they would con tinue the important work started 70 years ago for many years to come. A special thank you went to Mrs. Macewich and Mrs. Mroz for their fine work in mak ing the banquet a great success and to branch member Ms. Nancy Rodak and her staff at Avianna for the de licious meal they had prepared for the event. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2002 11
