OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LVIII NOVEMBER 2001 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKC FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT On October 6 and 7, 2001, I addressed the UNWLA Board of Directors at a meeting held at UNWLA headquarters in New York City. An abridged version of my presentation follows: Welcome and thank you for coming to the Board of Directors meeting in these trying times. There are many matters which need our attention. On September 11, 2001, the 21st Century, which the world welcomed with so much hope and excitement, became a harsh and fearful moment in world history. The devastating loss of lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, stunned America. Soon after the tragic events, President George W. Bush, in his address to a joint session of Congress and the American people, declared that “Freedom is at war with fear.” In the wake of the devastation, the UNWLA received letters of condolence from the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada and Branches of “Zhinocha Hromada” which held services for the victims. On September 15, following the UNWLA Executive Committee meeting, members took flowers and lighted candles, with ribbons identifying the UNWLA, to St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church. Photographs of this commemorative gesture appeared on Brama and the UNWLA website and have been published in The Ukrain ian Weekly , Svoboda, and Our Life. In my address to you today, I will touch upon many issues that will influence the future of our organiza tion. I will begin by sharing with you some wonderful news that came to us from Dr. Ivanna Ratych during her stay in the Czech Republic. In Prague, Ms. Ratych visited the Slovianska National Library Ukrainian division where she learned about twelve boxes of unpublished letters and documents of Lesya Ukrainka. She shared her findings with the Executive Committee, and we all agreed that the materials should be published. Dr. Ratych said that she would sponsor the project. A committee, chaired by Our Life editor-in-chief Irena Chaban, was formed to direct the proj ect. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Dr. Ratych for her generous gesture. Dr. Marta Bohachevky-Chomiak, who is working on a comprehensive history of the UNWLA, will now be assisted by Sophia Sluzar who will be writing about the last twenty years of the history of our organization. We believe that the proceedings of the XXVI UNWLA Convention will provide the information needed to complete the book. In the year 2000, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the UNWLA. During our celebration we realized how much we are appreciated in the Ukrainian-American community, not only for the work we do, but because we bring to each of our endeavors a harmonious attitude that allows us to work well within our organization and with others. Yet while we have accomplished much, we sometimes still have to fight for our rightful place in our com munity. At this time, the UNWLA is a member of numerous organizations. We joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1948 and the National Council of Women USA in 1952. As a member of NCW/USA, our or ganization is affiliated with the International Council of Women. The UNWLA was co-founder of the World Fed eration of Women’s Organizations and became a member of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council in 2000. We are also a member organization of the Ukrainian World Congress and, through our membership in the WFUWO, the UNWLA president is on the presidium of the UWC. At the Third World Forum, your president was appointed to the Board of the UWCC. At the IV All Ukrainian Gathering of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine, I suggested that organizations around the world named “ Soyuz Ukrainok” should symbolically unite to form World Soyuz Ukrainok to re-establish a tradition that goes back to 1933. This recommendation was unani-
