We con gratulate WFUWO for this well deserved tribute. FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT The Role of Volunteering “Society needs to recognize and promote volunteerism as a valuable activity. They must facilitate the work of volunteers, and encourage voluntary action at home and abroad... by calling upon volunteers and building partnerships with civil society, governments can help increase the efficiency of public services, and insure that they reach more people”. (UN Secretary General, Koffi Annan at the Opening Ceremony o f the International Year of Volunteers, Nov. 28, 2000) The thirty-ninth Session of the Commission for Social Development, held at the United Nations from February 13 to March 2, 2001, for the first time took up the theme of volunteering as a subject for substantive discussion. It was said that volunteering is both habits of the heart and civic virtue. It is an action deeply rooted in the human spirit with far reaching social and cultural impact. Being concerned with responding to the needs of others is evidence of highest human motivation. Human beings help each other out of love and compassion; we are what we give. By caring and sharing, we become more fully human. Volunteering has been a major component o f human behavior throughout civilization. Volunteerism is not a nostalgic relic from the past, something doomed. Today, it is alive and well and flourishing. The more contemporary words for caring and sharing are participation and responsibility, and these are at the very heart of active citizenship. Volunteering takes many shapes and forms; it provides a strong platform for reconnecting people who have become increasingly divided and lonely with people who are looking for ways to be helpful. Volunteering is defined by tasks and duties and should be enjoyable; there is an opportunity to meet friendly people. The expectations of volunteers are generally clearly fulfilled.
