NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS • February 3, 2001. The Regional Council of Detroit held its annual meeting. Natalia Hewko was re elected president. • March 4, 2001. The Regional Council of New England held its annual meeting. Zoryana Mishtal was re-elected president. • March 3-5, 2001. First Vice-president Maria Tomorug, liaison between the UNWLA Executive Committee and the XXVI Convention Committee, met with committee members in Florida to discuss their plans, duties, and obligations. • March 10, 2001. The Chicago Regional Council held its annual meeting. Lubomyra Kalin was re elected president. Luba Bilowchtchuk, the UNWLA's Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program Chair, was invited to speak at the meeting. • March 31, 2001. The Regional Council of New Jersey held its annual meeting and a new president, Jaroslava Mulyk, was elected. • April 25, 2001. UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyc- kyj attended a reception at the Ukrainian Mission to the United Nation to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the Chomobyl accident. Many other UNWLA members, some representing other or ganizations and others as private guests, attended. • At this time I would like to thank Dr. Chistina Durbak for her generosity in donating the airfare for Ukraine's Ambassador to the Vatican, Nina Kovalska, so that she was able to attend the UNWLA's Pre-Convention Program, which was held in Chicago, Illinois. Thank you, Dr. Durbak, for your generous contribution. • April 25 to 27, 2001. A conference to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Chomobyl nuclear disaster was held at the United Nations. Sponsored by Dr. Christina Durbak, President of World In formation Transfer, the conference was attended by UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Social Welfare Chair Nadia Shmigel. • April 28, 2001. UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Vice-president Sophia Hewryk attended the opening of the new exhibit, “ Three Generations of Cholodny Artists”. • April 29, 2001. Self Reliance New York celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a concert and reception. The UNWLA, represented by President Iryna Kurowyckyj, participated in the celebration. The UNWLA (among other organizations) received a gift of $10,000 from Self Reliance New York. O ur organization is very grateful to President Bohdan Kekish, C hairm an of the Board of the Directors, M yroslaw Shmigel, and all the other M embers of the Board. • April 29, 2001. The New York - North Regional Council held it annual meeting in Syracuse, NY. Archives Committee Chair Olga Trytyak represented the Executive Committee at this meeting and presented greetings from the President. Marta Stasiuk was re-elected president of New York - North Regional Council. • M ay 5, 2001. The "Christening" of newly formed Branch 127 of New York City was held. During the event, President Iryna Kurowyckyj formally welcomed the new Branch into the organization and Vice-president Sophia Hewryk recited the duties and obligations qf UNWLA members. Executive Committee members Barbara Bachunsky, Recording Secretary, and Irena Steckiw, Member-at-Large, also attended this event. We would like to express our gratitude to editor-in chief of Our Life Irena Chaban and president of Branch 127, Oksana Lychowyd, for their work in organizing the new branch. • M ay 6, 2001. The annual meeting of the Regional Council of New York was held. UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj greeted those assembled and presented a brief summary of what has been done at the National level of the UNWLA and plans for the future. Nadia Sawczuk was re-elected president of the Regional Council. • M ay 14, 2001. Wagner School of Public Service at New York University has been awarded a US State Department Grant to host Ukrainian government officials working in the public policy and management areas. The UNWLA President and others from the Ukrainian Community were invited to meet with the group from Ukraine. We all had the opportunity to introduce ourselves and say a few words about the work that we are doing in our respective organizations. Iryna Kurowyckyj, after her brief remarks about the UNWLA, presented each of the visitors from Ukraine with the issues of Our Life. • M ay 15 2001. The President of the 52nd General Assembly of the United Nations, President of Rukh, and Member of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada, Hennady Udovenko, recently spoke at a Ukrainian Congress Committee meeting.
