In M em o ria m MARY SAGAN KODAK Mary Rodak 18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2001 The members of Branch 36 in Chicago are deeply saddened by the passing of our good and faithful member Mrs. Mary Sagan Rodak, who died on September 13, 2000 after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Rodak was bom June 2, 1920, in the village of Mats’kovych, Peremyshl oblast of Ukraine. After World War II, she immigrated to Chicago from Germany, and in 1959, she became a member of UNWLA Branch 36. In 1965, Mrs. Rodak was chosen as recording secretary of Branch 36. In 1971 and 1975 she was elected vice-president. She served as branch president from 1967 to 1970 and once again from 1977 to 1979. Mary Rodak was active not only in the UNWLA, but also in other community organizations and institutions. For many years, she catered various Ukrainian functions held at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Ukrainian Catholic Church. In 1980, Mrs. Rodak and her family opened a successful banquet hall, Little Kiev; in 1996, the Rodaks opened a second banquet hall which they named Aviana. Although she was busy with the family business, Mrs. Rodak always had time for the UNWLA. Members of Branch 36 would meet at Little Kiev to make varenyky for our annual Palm Sunday and Thanksgiving varenyky sales, for which Mary Rodak would donate dozens of pasky and pastries as well as her famous strudel. Mary Rodak is survived by her husband Joseph, three children, a grandson, and family in Ukraine and Poland. She will be truly missed, not only by her family, but by the members of the Ukrainian community where she touched so many lives.
