OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LVIII FEBRUARY 2001 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Salutes George W. Bush on his Inauguration as President of the United States of America FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Dear UNWLA members, patrons and readers of Our Life, The Executive Committee of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America salutes the Ukrainian Museum in New York City on its 25th Anniversary. The Ukrainian Museum in New York began as an idea that stemmed from UNWLA participation in the 1933 World’s Fair held in Chicago. At that time, the UNWLA purchased a variety of artifacts which were exhibited at the World’s Fair. Afterwards, it was determined that the artifacts should become the basis for a permanent collection that could be expanded and properly maintained in a museum setting. It took many years and a lot of hard work for the idea to become a reality. Finally, in 1976, the Ukrainian Museum was established and opened its doors to the public. The UNWLA played a key role in this process and it is interesting to note that the UNWLA’s endeavors mirrored those of American women’s organizations with similar goals and purposes. In 1959, an American women’s group founded a museum on the George Washington Estate. A museum honoring the birthplace of the women’s movement in America, located in Seneca Falls, New York, was similarly founded. Other women’s groups have also taken responsibility for establishing museums to house and preserve important artifacts that might otherwise disappear or perish from neglect.
