UNWLA Branch 98 Elects New Officers and Reviews a Busy Year By Anna Krawczuk Tamara Schmotolocha, Mary Bonanno, Christine Roland, M. Orysia Jacus, Victoria Mischenko, Olga Boeckel and Taisa Jacus at Branch 98's Christmas party. On January 28, 2001, UNWLA Branch 98 of Holmdel-Middletown, New Jersey held its annual meeting and election of officers. M. Orysia Jacus was re-elected branch president. Other officers elected were Mary Bonanno (vice president), Victoria Mis chenko (secretary), Anna Krawczuk (treasurer), Elizabeth Bama (membership chair), Ann Pederson (culture chair), Christine Roland (social welfare chair), and Margaret Putykewycz (auditing committee chair). A special guest at the annual meeting was Maria Polanskyj, President of the New Jersey Regional Council. During the course of the year 2000, UNWLA Branch 98 of Holmdel-Middleton, New Jersey fulfilled its obligations to UNWLA Headquarters and the New Jersey Regional Council, increased its membership, and hosted a number of interesting events. With our newest members, Ulana Joslin and Tamara Schmotolocha, we are now 17 strong. As the UNWLA celebrated its 75 th anniversary, Branch 98 worked to increase knowledge about Ukraine and Ukrainians within their community. Members donated Ukraine: A History by Orest Subtelny to Monmouth County Library's reference department and Sky Unwashed by Irene Zabytko to the Holmdel Library. A lecture by Branch 98 member Margaret Zakanycz Putykewycz, D.P.M, on "Good Foot Health" was open to the public. An annual Christmas party has become a custom as well as a fund raiser and one was hosted by branch members in December of 2000. This time, the invitation was extended to people who are not members of the Ukrainian American community in our vicinity, especially to people who live alone. Our special guest speaker was UNWLA Scholar ship/Student Sponsorship Program Chair Luba Bilo wchtchuk and guests were treated to an interesting slide presentation on the impact of the scholarship program on the Ukrainian community in Brazil. In 2000, Ms. Bilowchtchuk, together with M. Orysia Jacus, who has served as Scholarship Program treasurer since 1984, visited Ukrainian Brazilian colonies, schools and seminaries in the state of Parana where ethnic Ukrainians have been a majority for more than one hundred years. They were joined for part of the trip by UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and were successful in establishing the UNWLA Scholar ship Program Alumni Association in Brazil, whose goal will be to increase financial aid for a new generation of students. From the slide presentation, it became evident that more sponsors are needed for Ukrainian Brazilian pupils and students. Most are from poor villages and large farming families. This year, we hope to expand the scope of our activities in many ways, and we are already off to a good start.
