• Violence against women ranked as high as cancer for killing and incapacitating women of child bearing age. • At least 20% of women have been physically on sexually assaulted. • Two million girls aged 5-15 are trafficked, sold or coerced into the commercial sex market each year. The list is long, but thanks to the NGOs, awareness about these issues and the need to empower women and erase gender disparities through out the world have been raised. Having recently moved from Baltimore, where I was a member of Branch 80, I knew it would be a good opportunity to meet other Ukrainian women and make a contribution to the community. Little did I expect the year to be so fulfilling. During our first meeting in late February, I was impressed by the nearly 20 women — mothers and young professionals — who were eager to contribute their precious time to better our Ukrainian community. Unexpectedly, I was elected to lead Branch 115 in its formative year, and felt confident that I would receive support from the other board members. We sought the expertise of Mr. Roman Seniuk, a talented Detroit artist, who agreed to conduct the workshop. He requested that we have a minimum of eight children. Looking around the room, we counted six children from among the members present and we worried a bit that we would disappoint our 12 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2001 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
