NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS • On January 12, 2000, the UNWLA was invited to participate in a committee organized to honor Gen eral Taras Chuprynka, the Commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, on the 50th anniversary of his tragic death. Irena Chaban, editor-in-chief of Our Life , represented the UNWLA at the organiza tional meeting of the committee and was elected one of the committee's vice-presidents. • On January 13, 2000, a telephone conference was set up with Leon Fuerth, Vice President AI Gore's national security advisor, to brief members of the Ukrainian community about the outcome of the De cember 1999 Gore-Kuchma Binational Committee meeting in Washington. UNWLA president Iryna Kurowyckyj participated in the conference call, during which she expressed her concerns about women's issues in Ukraine that had not even been raised at the meeting. • On January 15, 2000, UNWLA president Iryna Kurowyckyj and Our Life editor Irena Chaban at tended a name day celebration for Bishop Basil Lo sten. In her greetings to the Bishop, President Ku rowyckyj mentioned the priests and nuns who were recipients of UNWLA scholarships. Bishop Losten is a great supporter of the UNWLA Scholarship Program and is one of the program's sponsors. • On January 19, 2000, the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington D.C. hosted a traditional Christmas Concert. The UNWLA was represented at the event by Motria Sloniewsky, UNWLA Vice President and Public Relations Chair. • On January 22, 2000, Dr. Zenon Matkiwsky and Alexander Kuzma, Esq., visited UNWLA head quarters to share some thoughts on new develop ments in Ukraine with respect to children's health. President Iryna Kurowyckyj and recording secretary Barbara Bachynsky met with the guests. • On January 27, 2000 the UNWLA president at tended a briefing on the FY 2000 budget for U.S. as sistance to Ukraine at the Office of the Coordinator on Assistance to the New Independent States at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. • On January 29, 2000, the first Executive Commit tee Meeting of the UNWLA of this century was held. Sitting at the Bishop's table during the celebration o f His Excellency's Names Day are: Lev Futala, President o f SUMA (Yonkers) Federal Credit Union, Dr. Bohdan Kekish, President o f Self Reliance New York Federal Credit Union, Iryna Kurowyckyj, President o f Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America, H.E. Bishop Basil Losten, Anna Kushnuyk, Consul o f Ukraine to New York, Dr. Askold Lozynsky, President o f Ukrainian Congress Committee o f America and Ukrainian World Congress.
