Vol. LVII MARCH 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT In March, UNWLA Regional Councils will begin celebrating the 75th anniversary of the UNWLA. In recog nition of these celebrations, the Executive Board and the National Board extend greetings to all Regional Councils and their members together with sincere wishes for success, happiness and harmony. The first Regional Council of the UNWLA was organized in Detroit in 1935 and for this reason, the scheduled 75th anniversary celebrations by Regional Councils will begin in Detroit on March 18, 2000. The Philadelphia Regional Council was organized in 1938, and as the second Regional Council of the UNWLA, Philadelphia will celebrate on March 26, 2000. Other celebrations by other Regional Councils will follow. Each celebration will bring us new ideas so that we can strive even harder to achieve our aims and goals. Reflecting on our past accomplishments will give us new energy. As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our organization, we should look into our past and recognize with pride our achievements and accomplishments. We should reflect on how much time and effort were spent by UNWLA members on the organization's numerous actions and programs — all for the betterment of the Ukrainian community in the USA or to help aid our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. But as we look at the past from a perspective of time, we see that the UNWLA, while working hard for the common good of the Ukrainian community in the diaspora and in Ukraine, has done comparatively little for its members. Our programs and special efforts have traditionally been based on the needs of others. Today, when the economy in Ukraine is in such bad shape, we are again starting a new program for others, by establishing a luncheon program for school children in Ukraine. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, the Regional Councils have the opportunity and the responsibility to review the goals and aims of our organization, goals and aims which are very clearly defined in the UNWLA's by-laws. Each Regional Council should take steps to ensure that all future programs and actions of the UNWLA are planned pursuant to these by-laws and to the resolutions adopted at our conventions. In keeping with this, we request that UNWLA councils, branches and members keep in mind that the UNWLA cannot make donations to other organizations as such donations can make us lose our tax deductible status. 75 years is a long time for any organization to exist; longevity is not always easy. However, we can unequivocally state that the last 75 years have not been wasted, that they represent a history of hard work and achievement. We have a great legacy and in this anniversary year, we are also looking to the future for we want to share this legacy with a younger generation of women by inviting them to become members of our organization and continue our work. In closing, I would like to share with you some recent highlights of the UNWLA's accomplishments. Our Life has a new computer. Our thanks again to all those who, at the 25th UNWLA Convention, made generous contributions toward the purchase of this computer. We also have our own web page — http://www/unwla.org, and we invite all UNWLA Branches and Regional Councils to submit notification of their celebrations, programs, and activities which we can include on our web page. We are currently seeking a suitable candidate to assume responsibility as coordinator of a UNWLA "chat room" program on the Internet. Let us hear from you. With God's blessings in all of your endeavors, Iryna Kurowyckyj , President Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
