During our stay in Kharkiv, we met with Lesia Dudchenko, president of UNWL-Kharkiv. We were pleased to learn that Yarema Bachynsky, who is presently coordinator of the “Milk and Roll” project has worked out a plan with President Dudchenko to teach Ukrainian traditions, such as St. Nicholas Day, in the school. While in Kharkiv, we also accepted an invitation to appear on a local television program. Back at UNWLU headquarters in Kyiv, we met with Dr. Z. Nizhnik and others to discuss various programs and plans. Nadia Shmigel invited Lidia Choma Matashek to provide information on the functions of USAID. Our next stop was School # 21 in Lviv where our "Milk and Roll" project had been launched in February. It was the last day of school and we were invited to attend a performance by the children in honor of Mother's Day. We were also happy just to watch the children drink their milk and eat their rolls. At a meeting with Zoriana Bilyk, president of UNWL-Lviv, many issues of concern to women were discussed. School #21 in Lviv. Children performing in honor of Mother’s Day. Our next stop in Lviv was a visit to a pediatric eye hospital. At a televised ceremony, we presented funds, donated by UNWLA Branch 56 of Florida, for the purchase of new medical instruments for the hospital. At a children's hospital headed by Dr. Myndiuk, we had the opportunity to examine the medical equipment which had been purchased for the hospital by the UNWLA. Our presence in the hospital is highly visible. In the corridor leading to the room where the UNWLA funded medical equipment is, are several enlarged photographs: Honorary UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk with President Clinton and Vice President Gore , Lidia Czemyk with First Lady Hillary Clinton, our National Board. Later that day we visited the Truskavets "Krystal Sanatorium" where the UNWLA sponsors children's camps through the UNWLU. That evening we met with Taras Chaban, Lviv's coordinator for the "Milk and Roll" project and with UNWL-Lviv President Zoriana Bilyk with whom we discussed ways to enhance our program at School #21. Our visit to Ukraine was satisfying and rewarding. It was full of productive meetings and programs, and thanks to our "Milk and Roll" coordinators Yarema Bachynsky and Taras Chaban, we were able to see that our project is on a very good track in both Kharkiv and Lviv. A special note of thanks belongs to Nadia Shmigel for her important input in all of our programs in Ukraine. As an addendum, I would like to announce that the UNWLA library has grown. The UNWLU presented us with a beautiful edition of Universal Dictionary- Encyclopedia. We thank the League for this wonderful addition to our library. Doctors from Lviv's Regional Children's Clinical Hospital also presented the UNWLA with a new edition of Vasyl Pilipiuk's Lviv-Seasons sponsored by UNESCO. Many other books for the UNWLA library were donated from various individuals and organizations during the UWCC meeting in Kyiv. At this time, I would like to remind all UNWLA members that the year end celebration for the UNWLA's 75th Anniversary will be held on December 2, 2000 in Washington DC. Information on where the event will be held will be supplied at a later date and we extend an invitation to all of you and hope that all of you will attend. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2000 13
