the UWCC with a special status. The president of the Ukrainian American Coordinating Council, Ihor Gawdiak, proposed that UNWLA membership be considered; the motion was seconded by the president of the Ukrainian World Congress, Askold Lozynskyj, and the UNWLA was accepted into the UWCC by unanimous vote. On May 22, we met with the president of the Ukrainian National Women's League of Ukraine, Atena Pashko, and her Executive Board. Many subjects were discussed, such as sponsorship of children's health camps during the summer, assistance to the needy, and other topics of mutual interest. The UNWLA president suggested that we should organize a world wide network of organizations with the same name (Soyuz Ukrainok), at first in the form of a networking group which might later evolve into an official organization. If it succeeds through networking, the Ukrainian International Women's League will be able to take its historical place as a world organization. At the meeting, we also discussed important issues which unite us as women. The UNWL of Ukraine is a powerful group of women who are educating their constituency in building a better future for generations to come in independent Ukraine. On May 22, Ukraine commemorates the transfer of the body of Taras Shevchenko to Ukraine for burial. During the day, people in Kyiv honor Shevchenko's memory by leaving wreaths and flowers at the base of his statue. President Atena Pashko and President Iryna Kurowyckyj jointly carried a basket of flowers to the site; they were followed by Iryna Holubyewa, president of the National Council of Ukraine, and Nadia Shmigel. Patriarch Filaret led the procession to the statue. After the religious services, speeches honoring the great poet were delivered by representatives of the government and the private sector. The only woman speaker at the ceremony was Atena Pashko. In Kyiv, the publishing house of Smoloskyp has initiated a project that will help Ukrainian readers buy Ukrainian books, a project intended to combat the Russian government's practice of financing the proliferation of Russian books and newspapers in Ukraine. Thus subsidized, some storekeepers put high prices on Ukrainian books or hide them. Smoloskyp's answer to this problem is to open kiosks throughout Kyiv that would specialize in selling Ukrainian language books, magazines and newspapers. In a gesture of support for this project, the UNWLA, with the participation of the UNWL of Ukraine, has purchased a kiosk for $1,000.00. The names of both organizations will appear on the kiosk. During our stay in Kyiv, as members of the Ukrainian World Congress delegation, we had the opportunity to meet with Chair of the Verkhovna Rada, Ivan Pliushch, Minister of Foreign Affairs Borys Tarasiuk and Minister of Education Vasyl Kremen. Of special interest was our discussion with Minister Kremen about the need to supply school #3 in Kharkiv with Ukrainian books. There were other meetings with high officials, but Nadia Shmigel and I had to go to Kharkiv to see how our "Milk and Roll" project is moving along. At Kharkiv's School #3 we were invited to hear the children perform fragments from Lisova Pisnia. Appropriately, the school is named in honor of Lesia Ukrainka. The younger children then sang songs and recited poems and thanked us for the milk and rolls. 12 At Kharkiv’s School # 3. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2000 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
