Monthly, published by Ukrainian National W omen’s League o f America Vol. LVII JUNE 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Dear UNWLA members and readers of Our Life : I would like to share with you some wonderful news. On May 19, 2000, in Kyiv, the Ukrainian National Women's League of America was awarded membership status in the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council (UWCC). This is indeed a wonderful achievement for our organization which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The UWCC is a coordinating body for Ukrainians living throughout the world. Its purpose is to unite Ukrainians throughout the world and help them preserve their national identity in the countries where they reside. It was founded after the World Forum held in Kyiv in August 1992. The establishing meeting of the UWCC was held in Kyiv in January 1993 and the organization registered with the Ministry of Justice in Ukraine in 1993 (document #449). The Annual Meeting of the UWCC this year was held from May 19 to May 20. UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and UNWLA Social Welfare Chair Nadia Shmigel attended the meeting. Ivan Drach, the president of the UWCC, opened the meeting, welcomed participants and guests and thanked everyone for attending. After the formalities, Mr. Drach submitted his resignation, citing the demands of his new position in the Ukrainian government. The position of president of the UWCC was passed on to first Vice President Mykhailo Horyn. The By-Laws Committee of the UWCC had decided that no new members would be accepted at this meeting and that consideration of new member organizations was a matter for the General Meeting to be held next year. During the day, however, events took a different turn. Several organizations applied for membership and were accepted. In light of this, UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj asked that our organization be admitted to “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2000 11
